Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Niagara, 12-5

Weltner climbs to first in program history for career draw controls

VESTAL, N.Y. (BUBearcat.com) - The Binghamton women's lacrosse team (4-4) fell to Niagara (5-1), 12-5, at the Bearcat Sports Complex, Saturday afternoon. 

Despite the loss, BU led NU in both shots (29-24) and shots on goal (17-16). The Bearcats also picked up 17 ground balls compared to Niagara's 11. 

Olivia Muscolino led Binghamton with two goals while Hayley Weltner, Kristen Scheidel and Madison Murphy added one apiece. Abigail Carroll and Carla Curth chipped in one assist each. 

Weltner earned four draw controls to climb to first place in program history for career draw controls with 204. The senior's performance today in the circle broke Rebecca Golderman's (2015-19) previous program record of 202. 

Emma Conroy registered a Bearcat-best four ground balls and three caused turnovers in the loss, both career-high numbers for the senior. 

Niagara commanded the game early, scoring four goals while shutting out BU for the entirety of the first quarter. The Purple Eagles recorded another goal to start the second stanza before Muscolino got Binghamton on the board with 8:16 left in the half to cut NU's lead to 5-1. 

The Purple Eagles put up two next before Weltner found the back of the net for the Bearcats. Both teams registered two more goals in the first half to make the game 7-3 heading into the break. 

NU came out of halftime on top once again with its eighth goal of the contest until Murphy struck for BU to bring the Purple Eagles' advantage to four, 8-4. 

Binghamton gave up four unanswered goals next before Muscolino posted the final score of the game with 2:11 remaining in regulation to make it a 12-5 victory for the visiting team. 

Next up, Binghamton will host Cornell, Tuesday, March 12, at the Bearcat Sports Complex. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
