Baseball overtaken by Cornell 9-7

Bearcats one strike away from win, give up four in ninth and lose at home

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Cornell (11-13) scored four runs in the ninth inning to rally past Binghamton baseball (13-19) 9-7 Tuesday night at Bearcats Baseball Stadium. The Bearcats built a 7-2 lead after six innings before the Big Red rallied to take the first of two games between the teams this spring.

Leading 7-5 entering the ninth, BU surrendered a leadoff home run but then recorded two outs and was a strike away from sealing the win before Cornell belted a three-run home run to complete its rally. In the bottom of the ninth, BU put two runners on via walk before a double play grounder ended the game.

Junior second baseman Nick Roselli went 2-for-4 with two RBI and senior left fielder Eric Madenberg and junior DH Evin Sullivan had two RBI apiece. Senior center fielder Tommy Reifler collected two hits.

The Bearcats were limited to six hits and confined all their scoring to the sixth inning, when they took advantage of four Cornell walks and strung together four straight hits to score seven runs. Trailing 2-0, BU began its rally with four straight walks courtesy of Big Red pitching. Senior shortstop Isaiah Corry brought in the first run with a bases-loaded walk. Madenberg followed with a two-run single up the middle to give BU a 3-2 lead. After a Reifler bunt single, Roselli lashed a two-run double to left field and Sullivan followed with a two-run double to left center, extending BU's lead to 7-2.

But Cornell tallied three unearned runs in the seventh on two BU errors to pull within two, 7-5.

The teams used 14 pitchers who combined for 20 walks and 18 strikeouts. Binghamton was granted 12 walks but wound up leaving 10 men stranded on the basepaths.

The Bearcats host UAlbany in a three-game series beginning Friday night.
