VESTAL, N.Y. - Opportunistic Binghamton baseball (14-19, 4-9 America East) took advantage of a shaky 10th inning by visiting UAlbany and walked-off the Great Danes (5-25, 3-9 AE) 4-3 Friday night at Bearcats Baseball Stadium. With the win in the series opener, BU jumped ahead of UAlbany in the conference standings. It was the team's fourth walk-off in the last month.
Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 10th, junior catcher
Zach Rogacki drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore shortstop
Mike Stellrecht. After a lineout and walk to senior center fielder
Tommy Reifler, junior second baseman
Nick Roselli came up with the winning run on third base and two out. He skied a fly ball to left center that the Great Danes' outfielder misplayed, allowing Rogacki to trot home with the winning run.Â
Four Bearcat pitchers limited UAlbany to five hits and produced nine scoreless innings. Junior closer
Chris Sleeper (W, 2-1) worked the final 1.2 scoreless frames and struck out three. He lowered his season ERA to 2.92. Before that, senior starter
Gabe Driscoll (4.0 IP, 2 ER, 6K), senior
John Lumpinski (2.2 IP, 1 hit, 2K) and graduate
Theo Farynick (1.2 IP, 0 hits, 2K) kept the Great Danes in check.
Binghamton jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning before going eight scoreless innings until the winning run in the 10th. UAlbany also added lots of zeroes to the scoreboard, before and after, their three-run outburst in the fourth.
Senior right fielder
Mike Gunning belted his America East-leading 14th home run of the season to account for the first-inning flurry. Reifler led off with a single and with one out, junior DH
Evin Sullivan delivered a double inside the third base bag. Gunning followed with his three-run shot on a 2-0 pitch. He sent it over the right field wall to give BU a quick 3-0 lead.
UAlbany tied it with three runs on four hits in the fourth.Â
Reifler went 2-for-4 and six other Bearcats had one hit apiece.Â
The teams continue the series with a 2 p.m. single game on Saturday.  Â
