VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton (30-14, 12-4 AE) got outstanding performances at the plate, on the mound and in the field as it swept Bryant (30-13, 12-5) 7-3 and 8-0 in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victories, the Bearcats have reached the 30-win mark for just the fourth time in program history, with the most recent instance coming in 2016.
The Bearcats hit .404 as a team during the doubleheader and smacked five home runs. Redshirt junior third baseman
Shelby Carvalho hit .667, homered and drove in four runs. Finishing with three RBI each were senior pitcher/first baseman
Allison L'Amoreaux and sophomore outfielder
Bella Farina. Both of them belted a home run.
L'Amoreaux and sophomore pitcher
Olivia Kennedy each turned in a complete-game victory on the mound. Their combined ERA was 1.75 and they held a Bryant squad that came into the day leading the America East in batting to just a .186 average. In addition, Binghamton did not commit an error in either game.
"I was really happy with our bats today," head coach
Jess Bump said. "We talked this week about being locked in at the plate. I was also super proud of our pitching. When we are locked in and play well in all three part of the game, we are a tough team to beat."
Ironically, the day did not get off to a good start for the Bearcats. Just two batters into the first game, Bryant got a two-run home run by Aleix Hudson to go up 2-0.
The Bearcats, however, struck back with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Senior first baseman
Alex Musial delivered the big blow of the frame with a two-run home run while L'Amoreaux had an RBI double and Carvalho singled home a run.
Makenna Coleman of Bryant trimmed the deficit to 5-3 when she led off the top of the third inning with a home run. The Bearcats, however, used back-to-back home runs by junior outfielder
Sarah Rende and L'Amoreaux in the bottom of the sixth inning to plate a pair of insurance runs.
L'Amoreaux shook off the rough start and scattered three runs on five hits and struck out five batters during the game. She allowed only six total base runners and improved her record to 11-4.
The loss was tagged to Kylie Kenney, whose record fell to 9-6.
L'Amoreaux and Carvalho each went 3-for-4 in the first game.
The second game got pushed back to a 6 p.m. start due to the weather forecast but the Bearcats picked up where they left off, taking a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Farina capped the frame with a two-run single.
L'Amoreaux made it 4-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning and the Bearcats went on to score four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Carvalho and Farina both homered during that stretch.
Kennedy, meanwhile, raised her record to 9-2 with her second shutout of the season. She allowed only three hits, issued no walks and struck out seven batters in just five innings.
Take the loss was Caroline Paolantoino, whose record dropped to 2-2.
Farina was 2-for-3 in the nightcap and drove in all three of her runs.
L'Amoreaux went 4-for-7 (.571) on the day while Farina hit .500 (2-for-4). Redshirt junior outfielder
Lindsey Walter, meanwhile, was 2-for-3 (.667) with a sacrifice bunt and a walk.
Binghamton and Bryant conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 10 a.m.
NOTES: Binghamton won a program-record 37 games in 1997, 34 games in 2016 and 30 games in 2013.
