VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux doubled home
redshirt junior outfielder
Lindsey Walter in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting Binghamton (31-14, 13-4 AE) to an 8-7 walk-off win over Bryant (30-14, 12-6 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday morning at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats sweep the three-game series against the Bulldogs and take over first place in the conference with three regular-season games left to play.
The 31 wins for the Bearcats this season represents the third-best total in program history. Binghamton won 37 games in 1997 and 34 games in 2016.
L'Amoreaux got it done for the Bearcats both at the plate and on the mound against the Bulldogs on Sunday. She went 3-for-4 with her RBI double and scored a pair of runs. On the mound, she pitched seven innings in relief, scattering two runs on four hits and striking out five batters. Her record for the season is now 12-4.
During the three-game sweep over Bryant, L'Amoreaux hit a team-best .636 (7-for-11) with a home run and four RBI. She also went 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 14.0 innings.
Also continuing their heroics for the Bearcats on Sunday was redshirt junior third baseman Shelby Carvalho, who belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. She finished the weekend series .500 (5-for-10) with two home runs and seven RBI.
For the season, Carvalho now has 10 home runs, which leads the America East Conference. She is the first Binghamton player to reach double digits in home runs since current assistant coach Kate Richard hit 13 homers during the 2017 season.
The Bearcats' victory on Sunday overshadowed a five-RBI performance by McKenna Coleman of Bryant. She drilled a three-run home run in the top of the second inning and singled home two more runs in the top of the third inning.
Through three innings, Sunday's game was shaping up as a slugfest, with Bryant taking a 7-5 lead. The Bearcats pulled to within 7-6 on an RBI double by redshirt junior outfielder Brianna Santos in the bottom of the fourth inning. They then tied the game on an infield single by sophomore outfielder Bella Farina with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Santos started off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single but was out on a fielder's choice by Walter one batter later. That set the stage for L'Amoreaux, whose game-winning double to left-center field scored Walter from first base.
"I said yesterday that our team has a lot of fight and we don't give up easily," head coach Jess Bump said. "We started the game today well offensively. We then hit a little bit of a lull but made some adjustments. Today was a full team effort and I'm super proud of everyone."
Taking the loss in relief was Grace McKillop, whose record is now 10-4.
Walter finished the three-game series against Bryant 3-for-7 (.429) and scored four times. Farina went 3-for-8 (.375) with a home run and four RBI while Santos hit .364 (4-for-11).
As a team, the Bearcats hit .346 during the series and held the Bulldogs – who entered the weekend with a conference-best .311 batting average – to just a .237 mark over the three games.
Binghamton concludes its regular-season with a three-game series against UMass Lowell next Friday-Saturday.
NOTES: Binghamton's 48 home runs so far this season is the second-best total in program history, trailing only the 50 home runs in 2011. The Bearcats' 75 doubles, meanwhile, breaks the program record of 73 in 1997
