VESTAL, N.Y. (BinghamtonBearcats.com) - The Binghamton University Volleyball team (2-0) split its season opener at The Bearcat Classic, Friday afternoon inside the Events Center. Binghamton won its first match over Merrimack College, 3-0, but fell in its evening bout with University of Toledo, 3-0.

MATCH ONE - BINGHAMTON 3, MERRIMACK 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
Merrimack unforced errors, along with kills from Viktoria Dimitrova and Ella Schabort, gave the Bearcat an early 6-3 lead to start the match. Both teams stayed within three points of each other before the Warriors came within one at 12-11 on a Binghamton service error. After a kill from Misa Dlouha, the Bearcats started to pull away and took eight of the next 12 points and to lead, 21-12. Merrimack managed to hold off the home team with three straight points late, but kills from Dimitrova and Johanna Remy gave Binghamton the first set win, 25-16.

Binghamton recorded six straight points off kills from Schabort and Dlouha to start 6-0 in the second set. Each team was able to tack on three more before two kills from Dlouha and Sophia Holland put the Bearcats up, 11-3. Both opponents traded points once again until Binghamton went on a 3-0 run to lead by 11 at 15-6. Merrimack grabbed eight of the next 15 points but three Bearcat points closed out the set 25-14 in favor of the home team.

Binghamton's third set was the most competitive of the morning as it featured three tie scores and two lead changes. Three Merrimack errors gave the Bearcats the early 3-0 edge in the third frame. The teams went back and forth for multiple points until the Warriors went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the match, 19-18. Binghamton didn't back down and posted three consecutive points on kills from Ilieva and Remy to lead 21-19. Both opponents traded points in the final sequences until a Dlouha kill sealed the 25-23 set and match victory for the Bearcats.
