EASTON, Pa. – Graduate student back
Chris Comber scored in the 84
th minute, lifting Binghamton (3-2-1) to a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Lafayette (2-1-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday evening at Mike Bourger Field at Oaks Stadium. With the victory, the Bearcats improve to 2-1-0 on the road and have netted all three of their game-winning goals so far this season in the final seven minutes of play.
Comber's goal, which was his first of the season, was set up by a corner kick from senior midfielder
Billy Clark. There was a scramble in front of the net for the ball with Comber stationed by the far post. Eventually, the ball came to Comber who then fired it into the net.
From there, graduate student goalkeeper
Dylan McDermott preserved the Bearcats' third shutout victory of the season by making a save from close range. He finished the night with a pair of saves.
The Bearcat back line of Comber, seniors
Luke Yates,
Charlie Kaldor and
Carlo Cavalar as well as junior
Rio Onwumere limited the Leopards to seven total shots. The Bearcats blocked three Lafayette shots in the opening seven minutes of the match. In the final 83 minutes of play, however, Binghamton allowed only three total shots.
"We were good tonight," head coach
Paul Marco said. "What a great goal by Chris in the final minutes. I thought Dylan and our back line were outstanding tonight and our midfield was great the whole game. This is a good team that we beat and they will do very well this year."
Binghamton led 9-7 in total shots as well as 4-2 in shots on goal.
In the Bearcats' two previous victories this season – also by 1-0 margins – they scored both of their goals in the 83
rd minute. This time, it took Comber and the Bearcats one extra minute to get the game-winning goal.
Binghamton travels to Iona on Saturday for a 1 p.m match.
