NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- This time, the game-winning goal by Binghamton didn't with a few minutes left in the match. Instead, it came in the final seconds.
Senior back
Luke Yates scored with just 45 seconds remaining, lifting the Bearcats (4-2-1) to a 2-1 win at Iona (1-3-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Mazzella Field. The win is the second straight for Binghamton, who has now scored all four of its game-winning goals this season within the final eight minutes of play.
Yates' goal, which was his second game winner of the season, was set up by Thomas and senior midfielder
Carlo Cavalar. They got the ball to Yates who had an open look from 20 yards away. From there, he fired the ball into the top-right corner of the net.
"Our team has a lot of belief right now," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We didn't play well during the first half but we were much better in the second half. We kept doing the little things right as the match went on and got two great goals."
The goal by Yates also marked the first time that a Bearcat player has scored a game-winning goal in the 90
th minute since Matt Kristek at Vermont on Oct. 24, 2009. Kristek's goal in the 2-1 win came with 37 seconds left to go.
There were other heroes for Binghamton against the Gaels on Saturday. Thomas tied the match at 1-1 in the 81
st minute and finished the day with a career-best three points. In goal, meanwhile, graduate student
Dylan McDermott shook off allowing an early score and made two key saves in the final 20 minutes of the match.
Until the final 10 minutes of the match, the only goal was scored by Iona's Sergio Gonzales Fernandez in the 21
st minute. The assists were credited to Ricardo Senen Pinilos and Thiago Cagna.
The Bearcats, however, finally broke through in the 81
st minute. Freshman forward D.T. Megliola recovered a loose ball just outside the box. He got the ball to Thomas, whose overhead flick found the lower-right corner of the net.
Before Thomas tied the match, McDermott kept the Bearcats in the match. His biggest save came in the 71
st minute. Bautisa Rossi of the Gaels got behind the Binghamton defense but McDermott dove to make the stop from close range.
Iona finished the game with an 11-10 edge in total shots. Shots on goal were even at 3-3. In the second half alone, however, Binghamton outshot the Gaels 10-7.
Binghamton is now 3-1-0 on the road so far this season. The Bearcats will continue to add to that total when they travel to St. Peter's on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest.
