Men’s Soccer Nipped at Hofstra 3-2

Randazzo scores twice but Pride nets game-winning goal on a PK

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Eion Farrell converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, lifting unbeaten Hofstra (3-0-1) to a 3-2 win over Binghamton (2-2-0) in a non-conference men's soccer match at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Monday evening. The game marked the Bearcats' first contest this season against a team that is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Top 25 poll.

In a game that featured two ties and a pair of lead changes, the Pride was awarded a penalty kick when Binghamton received a yellow card for an infraction inside of the box. Farrell made the attempt, which broke a 2-2 deadlock and proved to be the game-winning score for the defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champions.

The Bearcats' loss overshadowed a career-high two goals by sophomore forward Anthony Randazzo. He is the first Binghamton player to score twice in a match since Shawn Coles against UMBC back on Nov. 1, 2022.

It was Randazzo who opened the scoring in the 25th minute of the match. Senior midfielder Carlo Cavalar took got a loose ball just outside the box. He then found Randazzo to the left of the goal and from there, Randazzo fired a shot into the lower-right corner of the net.

Hofstra, however, answered just two minutes later. Laurie Goddard headed in a cross from Danielle Mastroianni to deadlock the match at 1-1.

Late in the first half, graduate student goalkeeper got even with Goddard. Hofstra was awarded a penalty kick and Goddard took the attempt. McDermott, however, dove to his right to keep the ball out of the net. It was one a season-best four saves for McDermott.

Early in the second half, however, Goddard recorded the assist on Jacob Woznicki's goal that put Hofstra up 2-1. He got by a Bearcat defender near the right endline and fired a pass to Woznicki, who was stationed inside the box. Woznicki then scored from close range.

Binghamton, however, refused to go quietly as Randazzo tied the game again in the 62nd minute. Senior midfielder Billy Clark fired a long cross into the box and Randazzo headed it into the net. Clark now has a team-best two assists so far this season.

Just 10 minutes later, Farrell's penalty kick found the upper right corner of the net. That gave Hofstra the separation it needed to finish the match.

"I thought we had a pretty decent showing tonight against a very good team." head coach Paul Marco said. "I like how we played tonight. Anthony had a great match – and not just with the goals he scored. He was on the ball the whole game. And Dylan was outstanding in goal. We are getting better each match and we took a step forward tonight."

Hofstra out shot Binghamton 16-5 for the match and posted a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Binghamton returns home to face Colgate on Friday at 6:07 p.m.
