Men’s Soccer Defeated 2-0 by UMBC on Homecoming Weekend

Retrievers net pair of second-half goals in AE opener

VESTAL, N.Y. – Ricky Schissler and Karl Quist-Therson scored second-half goals and Hans Nesheim tallied a pair of assists, lifting UMBC (4-3-2, 1-0-0 AE) to 2-0 win over Binghamton (6-3-1, 0-1-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss, which also marked the Bearcats' annual Homecoming Game, snapped their four-match winning streak.

In the 62nd minute, Schissler finished off a Retriever possession that began with a free kick deep in the Bearcats' end of the field. He fired a shot from the right corner of the box into the top left corner of the net. The assists were credited to Nesheim and Tyquan Stroud.

The Retrievers' second goal was also generated by a free kick - this time in the 82nd minute. The ball eventually came to Nesheim, whose shot from close range was tipped in by Karl Quist-Therson.

Binghamton had several chances during the match to get on the score sheet. One of the Bearcat shots, however, hit the post and another two balls were cleared off the line.

UMBC finished with a 16-8 advantage in total shots and led by a 10-3 margin in shots on goal. Graduate student goalkeeper Dylan McDermott, however, made a career-high eight saves for the Bearcats.

"I thought we were very good in several moments of the game," head coach Paul Marco said. "We created a lot of scoring chances but were unlucky at times. We hit the post and had balls cleared off the line. But then we made a couple of mistakes on those two set pieces where we cleared the (initial) ball but didn't take care of the second ball and that led to the two goals. Other than that, I thought the guys were pretty good tonight and we will be ready to go on Tuesday."

Binghamton travels to Cornell on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
