VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Syracuse (5-1-1) tallied the game's lone goal in the 31st minute and the ACC member Orange held off a strong second half from Binghamton women's soccer (1-3-2) to post a 1-0 result Thursday night at Bearcats Sports Complex.
The Bearcats pressed for the equalizer and had a near-miss off the crossbar in the 61st minute. Freshman midfielder
Anna Buckwalter ripped a 20-yard shot that beat the keeper but banked down off the bar. The last strong chance came off the foot of freshman forward
Alexus Worrell in the 78th minute. Worrell corralled a ball sent in from the right side and toed an eight-yard shot that the SU keeper dove to smother.
Binghamton recorded six shots in the second half and was outshot 12-10 for the game.
Senior keeper
Kaitlyn Williams went the distance and made four saves.
"We were fired up for this game but I thought the first half we played more into Syracuse's game plan," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "In the second half it was a completely different story ... we played to our strengths. It was unfortunate that when we had the run of play we just couldn't finish off some really good looks. We're certainly disappointed with the result as it was a great opportunity to come out and get a 'W' but unfortunately it didn't work out that way. This is a game that will make us better though."
Binghamton remains at home and welcomes Wagner to town for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
