Women's Basketball Loses 55-46 to Vermont before record crowd of 4,627

Bearcats hold second annual “Beyond the Classroom Game”

VESTAL, N.Y. – Keira Hanson scored a team-best 14 points and Nikola Priede added 13 points, leading Vermont (9-10, 4-1) to a 55-46 win over Binghamton (11-7, 3-2 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Thursday morning before a program-record 4,627 fans at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The contest, which snapped the Bearcats' three-game winning streak, marked their second annual "Beyond the Classroom" game.

Hanson, who came off the bench to play 29 minutes, was 4-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc. Priede, meanwhile, was 5-of-9 from the field, sank all three of her free throws, grabbed six rebounds, dished out an assist and recorded a pair of steals.

The Catamounts' key to victory came on the boards as they outrebounded Binghamton 41-30. They held the Bearcats to just four offensive rebounds. Sarah Ericson of Vermont led the way with a game-high 10 rebounds while Bella Vito joined Priede in finishing with six rebounds.

For the Bearcats, redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz scored a game-high 15 points. She was 6-for-13 from the field and has now reached double figures in scoring three straight games.

Vermont led the game from start to finish. After scoring the first six points, the Catamounts settled into a 26-21 lead at the half. In the opening 1:45 of the third period, however, they scored the first eight points to take a 32-21 lead.

From there, Vermont extended its advantage to as much as 52-32 with seven minutes left in regulation.

The Bearcats got on track in the final period, scoring 16 points to climb to within single digits at the end of the game. They shot 6-for-11 (55 percent) and Weltz scored six of her points during that 10-minute stretch. By then, however, Vermont had enough of a cushion to stay in control down the stretch.

"The shots and layups that we had been making - I think we just assumed we were going to make them again today," head coach Mary Grimes said. "We didn't get many second-chance opportunities and that was a glaring stat. Vermont is an unbelievable team and offensively, I was proud of our team for holding them to just 55 points. But we have to be able to embrace contact and finish our own possessions."

Sophomore guard Yanniah Boyd added nine points while junior guard Meghan Casey came off the bench to add six points.

The Bearcats' second annual Beyond the Classroom Game was hosted by VISIONS, which offered complimentary tickets to all school-aged children in attendance. Thursday's attendance broke the previous program record of 3,427 fans that came out to last year's Beyond the Classroom Game on Jan. 11 against Bryant.

"It was awesome to see all of the little kids out there cheering us on," head coach Mary Grimes. "I am thankful for our marketing program for bringing everyone out today. It was amazing to have that environment."

Binghamton travels to UAlbany on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
