Women’s Basketball Loses 58-49 at NJIT

Boyd nets 15 points, Bennett adds 12 points

NEWARK, N.J. – Olivia Kulyk turned in a 21-point, 12-rebound performance, lifting NJIT (4-10, 1-0 AE) to a 58-49 win over Binghamton (8-6, 0-1 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Thursday evening at the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center. The game marked the start of the Bearcats' 24th season in the conference.

Kulyk drained four of the Highlanders' eight three-point field goals. In addition, she went 5-for-6 from the free throw line during the final three minutes of the game. Kulyk was the lone NJIT player to reach double figures in scoring.

Sophomore guard Yanniah Boyd led the Bearcats with 15 points while sophomore forward Kendall Bennett added a career-high 12 points. Boyd also finished with four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

Boyd scored 11 of her points in the first half as the Bearcats took a 30-26 lead at the break. It was a half of runs as the Bearcats scored eight straight points to take a 28-18 lead with 4:11 left in the second period. From there, however, the Highlanders answered with eight unanswered points of their own, trimming the deficit to 28-26 with 58 seconds left before the break.

At the end of the third period, Boyd's buzzer beater gave the Bearcats a 45-41 advantage. With 5:59 left in the fourth period, junior forward Camryn Fauria sank a pair of free throws as the Bearcats held on to a 49-46 lead.

Over the last six minutes of the game, however, the Bearcats were held scoreless as NJIT reeled off the final 12 points. Seven of those points came at the free throw line.

"We were just missing layup after layup at the end of the game," head coach Mary Grimes said. "We matched up pretty well against them but couldn't hit our shots and that is a focus thing. But NJIT is a three-point shooting team and they hit their shots to get back in the game."

Sophomore guard Bella Pucci scored eight points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Fauria had seven rebounds to go along with four points.

Binghamton outrebounded NJIT 34-31 and held a 36-22 advantage in points in the paint. The Bearcats, however, turned the ball over 22 times and the Highlanders scored 25 of their points off of those miscues.

The Bearcats travel to UMBC on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
