BALTIMORE – The Binghamton volleyball team was defeated in straight sets by the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Sunday at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
The Retrievers took down the Bearcats 25-15, 25-17 and 25-17.
Viktoria Dimitrova led the Bearcats with nine kills, while
Francesca Pierdonati and
Merima Smajlovic each added eight.
Regan Kadel also recorded a game-high 28 assists for Binghamton.
UMBC jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the opening set, before taking the first frame by 10 points. Binghamton stayed within striking distance in the second set, with the Bearcats trailing 8-5. But the Retrievers used a 6-1 run to increase their lead to 14-6. Binghamton never got within six points after that, as UMBC won the second set.
The Retrievers then took a 10-1 lead to start the third set, eventually leading 16-4. Trying to avoid falling in straight sets, the Bearcats fought back to bring it to 22-17. But the Retrievers closed out the set by scoring the final three points to win the match.
The Bearcats return home to host UAlbany at 7 p.m., on Friday at the Events Center for their Monster Match. To celebrate Halloween, the Bearcats will hold a costume contest for fans during the match. Admission is free on behalf of Hinman, Howard & Katell, LLP.
