VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore forward
Jahkaya Davis scored her eighth goal of the season in the first half and Binghamton women's soccer (10-1-5, 5-0-3 America East) earned a 1-1 draw with visiting Vermont (6-4-5, 4-1-2 AE) Sunday afternoon at Bearcats Sports Complex. Needing only a tie on Senior Day to claim the program's third regular season crown in the last four years, the Bearcats stood firm in the second half to accomplish the task and will now carry the No. 1 seed into the America East tournament.
The Davis goal in the ninth minute gave Binghamton the cushion it needed and the Bearcats only allowed a Vermont equalizer in the 67th minute before celebrating postgame. The tie extended the team's record unbeaten streak to 13 games and kept them unbeaten at home (6-0-1) for the first time in its 25-year Division I history. In the last four seasons, Binghamton has dropped just three conference games (20-3-9, 77%), best among all America East members.Ā
"I love this team ... in terms of how they compete ... how they grind," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "This is what we wanted to do all season long. At the end, to call ourselves 'conference champs' and to do it on Senior Day and have the No. 1 overall seed and know we will be hosting postseason is a great feeling. I'm so proud of these kids - they deserve everything."Ā
Davis and her teammates were explosive right from the opening whistle. She hit the post just 23 seconds into the game and the Bearcats pressed forward relentlessly during the game's first 30 minutes. On the goal, sophomore midfielder
Anna Buckwalter sent a ball out to the right wing, where junior back
Megan Baker collected and drove downfield. Baker cut a ball back inside the box to Davis, who one-timed a right-footer into the right corner for a 1-0 lead. It was Baker's fourth assist of the season.Ā
Needing a win to keep its own regular season title hopes alive, Vermont earned the equalizer in the 67th minute on a 20-yard shot that found the corner. But the Bearcats' defense kept its presence in the closing 23 minutes to maintain the draw.
Binghamton will now sit idle for 11 days before hosting a semifinal game at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6. If the Bearcats advance to the championship game, they would host at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9.Ā
