VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore forward
Jahkaya Davis snapped a 1-1 tie with the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute and Binghamton women's soccer (8-1-3, 3-0-1 America East) stretched its unbeaten streak to nine with a hard-fought 2-1 win over two-time reigning league champion Maine (2-5-2, 1-1-1 AE) Sunday afternoon at Bearcats Sports Complex. With the win, Binghamton improved to 5-0 at home and kept its grip on first place at the halfway point of America East play.
Less than two minutes after Maine tied the score late in the game, junior forward
Paige Luke sprung Davis behind the defense with a header and the conference leading scorer finished with a wicked blast just under the bar for the game winner. The play began with a Black Bears' goal kick that junior back
Megan Baker intercepted and played a ball into the middle. Luke jumped and headed it ahead to a breaking Davis, who fended off a defender, dribbled into the box and beat the rushing keeper high for her seventh goal of the season.
"A lot of these conference games come down to work rate and finishing," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "It was a great quality finish by Jahkaya to give us the three points. We are excited with the win and to be sitting in first place halfway through the conference season. We have to keep up that quality over a full 90 minutes and if we can do that we will have a good second half of conference play too."
The Bearcats opened the scoring in the 40th minute. Luke earned a corner kick on the left endline and freshman
Sydney Krempasky started and finished the sequence. Krempasky took the corner, which was twice headed around in the box. The second partial Maine clear came to the foot of graduate midfielder
Isabella Martillo, whose one-touch settled the bouncing ball back into the box. Krempasky took an aggressive line to the ball and blistered a 12-yard shot into the upper left netting for her first collegiate goal.
Maine took control of the momentum midway through the first half and held an 8-4 shots advantage at intermission. The Black Bears then tied the game in the 81st minute when a long ball from the back was headed on a looping arc over the Bearcat keeper and defenders and bounced into the unoccupied net.
The Black Bears finished with an 11-8 shots edge and each team had two corners. Binghamton freshman keeper
Bella Grace Dunn made seven saves in her first collegiate start.
Binghamton is off until heading to Lowell next Sunday for an away tilt against the River Hawks.
