WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Binghamton wrestling team competed in the inaugural Black Knight Open at Army West Point's Christl Arena Sunday, posting six placewinners at the tournament.
"Today was an important step forward for our young group," said Binghamton Head Wrestling Coach
Ryan LeBlanc. "For many of our guys, this was their first real competition of the season, and they gained exactly what they needed – valuable experience and a lot of matches under their belt. We saw plenty of learning opportunities throughout the day, and now it's about building on them. As a team, we need to keep wrestling forward, stay aggressive, and continue to take risks in positions that matter."
Highlights
- Charlie Tibbitts recorded the highest finish of any Bearcat by placing third at 285 lbs. The heavyweight started out his day by defeating both Tristen Hitchcock and Sam Sorenson of Army West Point. After falling to Brown's Alex Semenenko in the semifinals, Tibbitts was awarded third place after Army West Point's Austin Kohlhofer medically forfeited.
- Following a group championship at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic the prior weekend, Ryan Hartung followed that with a fourth-place finish at 141 lbs. Hartung first defeated Rutgers' Brandan Chletsos via a 6-2 decision, before pinning Mercyhurst's Marcus Colson for his third fall of the season. Hartung was then defeated by No. 21 Braden Basile of Army West Point in the semifinals, and then fell to Rutgers' Mason Gibson to finish fourth.
- In his collegiate debut, Jacob Hanlon recorded his first fall when he pinned Long Island University's Christopher Betancourt in the fifth place match at 133 lbs.
- Marco Albanese posted two victories en route to a sixth-place finish at 165 lbs. The redshirt sophomore previously finished fourth at the Navy Classic on Nov. 2.
- Caleb Sweet won three matches in a row before finishing sixth at 149 lbs.
- Quinn Funk posted a 12-1 major decision against Brown's Alex Hamrick to reach the podium, where he would ultimately finish sixth at 197 lbs.
