VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Niagara (1-1) used an 18-6 run in a six-minute span late in the game to rally past Binghamton men's basketball (1-2) 67-59 Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
The Bearcats led 47-40 with 7:48 remaining before the Purple Eagles strung together the big run. Niagara outscored Binghamton 27-12 over the final 6:26 to close out the win.
"We just didn't execute the way we needed to down the stretch," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "Congratulations to Niagara. Our play was up and down today ... after we got a seven-point lead, we were energetic but our execution wasn't good. They were able to get out in transition and score. We have to develop a killer instinct when we are up to not let a team come back in the game and we didn't do that today."
Senior center
Demetrius Lilley produced his second straight double-double with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Lilley pulled down five offensive boards and added three blocks to his stat line. Junior point guard
Jeremiah Quigley scored all 16 of his points in the second half and added three assists. Junior forward
Zyier Beverly hit 5-of-6 shots for 12 points. For the season, Beverly has made 14-of-17 shots (82%).
In the low-scoring first half, the Bearcats shook off a seven-point deficit, closed the half with an 18-8 run and led 25-22.
In the second period, Binghamton trailed 40-37 but Lilley (4 pts.) and Quigley (3 pts.) sparked a 10-0 run that gave the Bearcats a 47-40 lead with 7:48 remaining. But Binghamton made just one field goal over the next 6:14 and Niagara capitalized.
Binghamton next embarks on a five-day, two-game road trip that features a first-ever game at BIG EAST founding member Georgetown on Wednesday.
