Men's basketball handles Elmira in final tuneup 100-60

Bearcats put five in double figures, shoot school-record 69% in final non-conference game

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's basketball (4-11) shot a school-record 69 percent, put five players in double figures and rolled past visiting Elmira (5-4) 100-60 Monday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.

In the team's final non-conference game before America East play begins, the Bearcats raced out to a 22-9 lead in the first seven minutes and missed just one shot inside the arc in the first half (19-of-20). Leading 59-35 at intermission, Binghamton tacked on 41 more points to finish off its most lopsided win in two years, despite having just seven scholarship players available due to an unprecedented rash of injuries.

Junior forward Zyier Beverly hit 10-of-12 shots and poured in a game-high 25 points with nine rebounds, five blocks and three steals. Senior guard Wes Peterson, Jr. netted a career-high 22 points with seven rebounds. Peterson hit 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Junior point guard Jeremiah Quigley, who earlier in the day was named America East Player of the Week for his big game at Army, continued his production with 16 points and seven assists. Sophomore forward Stephan Snagg went a perfect 8-for-8 from the field en route to a career-high 16 points. Freshman guard Jake Blackburn added 12 points.

"I thought we did a good job guarding the 3-point line, which was important because Elmira likes to shoot the three," head coach Levell Sanders said. "I wanted us to play hard and respect our opponent and we did that today. We attacked the paint in the first half and didn't settle. We played to our strengths and saw some threes go down. We wanted to end the non-conference schedule playing the right way and for the most part, we did that. Any win gives you confidence and since we are shorthanded, now we have to figure out who is available and put that group in position to be successful."

The Bearcats scored 60 points in the paint on the heels of scoring 50 in the paint at Army. The Soaring Eagles used 18 players, compared to just eight for the Bearcats.

Binghamton opens league play by hosting NJIT at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

NOTES
Binghamton reached the century mark for the first time since defeating Marywood 108-52 on Dec. 30, 2023 ... it was the seventh time in the team's Division I era that they reached 100 points ... the shooting accuracy (69.1%) broke the record of 65.2%, set against Hartwick on Nov. 28, 2021.
