VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Le Moyne opened the game with a 19-4 run and the Dolphins (5-5) never relinquished the lead in a 78-63 win over Binghamton men's basketball (3-7) Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the win, Le Moyne won the third installment of the "Battle for the Interstate" rivalry series that the Bearcats had claimed the previous two seasons.
Binghamton missed its first nine shots of the game, fell behind 13-0 and could never get into an offensive rhythm. Down 19-4, the Bearcats used a 17-7 run to pull within five late in the first half. But the Dolphins closed the half with an 11-4 run to stake themselves to a 37-25 intermission cushion.
In the second, Binghamton twice pulled to within six points only to see Le Moyne counter with a run to push the margin back to double digits, where it stood for the final 12 minutes. The second half was bogged down by 24 fouls and 35 free throw attempts.
"Even though we knew they were a good 3-point shooting team, I thought the first few they made (6-for-9 in first half) rattled us and we weren't able to recover from that," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "I thought our inability to make some shots in the first half ... we missed a ton of layups ... that could've given us some much-needed energy. Le Moyne did a good job of doubling Demetrius (Lilley) ... they had a good game plan and we didn't do a good job of adjusting. We have to be able to score more points."
After shooting just 30 percent in the first half, the Bearcats improved to 44 percent accuracy and tallied 38 points in the second half. But Le Moyne countered by converting 61 percent of its shots in the final period.
Junior forward
Bryson Wilson led Binghamton with 17 points (11 in first half) and four assists. Senior center
Demetrius Lilley produced his seventh double-double of the season with 16 points (12 in second half) and 10 rebounds. Graduate guard
Jackson Benigni added 14 points.
Binghamton hosts Central Connecticut State at 4 p.m. next Saturday.
