Women’s basketball defeats Buffalo 71-58

Pucci scores 18 points, Goode and Bennett each add 10 points

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior guard Bella Pucci netted a game-high 18 points while senior guard Kaia Goode and junior forward Kendall Bennett each finished with 10 points, pacing Binghamton (5-3) to a 71-58 win over Buffalo (2-7) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory is the Bearcats' third in their past four games and also marked their first home contest since Nov. 11.

Pucci shot 5-for-12 from the field but was 8-of-9 from the free throw line. She also finished with five rebounds and tied for the team lead with three steals. Pucci has now reached double figures in scoring all eight games this year and continues to lead Binghamton with 16.1 points per game.

Goode was 3-of-7 from the field, canned a pair of three-point field goals and swished both of her free throws. Bennett, meanwhile, was 3-of-6 from the field, 4-of-6 from the free throw line, grabbed a team-best seven rebounds and also recorded three steals.

Binghamton led for the first 26 minutes of the game but a 9-0 run gave the Bulls a 48-45 edge with 3:33 left in the third period. Aniya Rowe, who led Buffalo with 17 points, punctuated the run with a three-point field goal.

From there, however, the Bearcats responded with an 11-0 run to end the third period with a 56-48 advantage. Pucci scored five of her points during that stretch and freshman guard Carletta Bennett capped the run with a buzzer-beating layup.

In the fourth period, Buffalo pulled to within 60-56 on a layup by Ella Corry at the 8:39 mark. Over the next four minutes, however, the Bearcats outscored the Bulls 7-2 and then kept a double-digit cushion the rest of the way.

"We've been talking a lot about controlling our emotions and I think we really did a good job of that today," head coach Mary Grimes said. "We had to stay level headed because Buffalo came in here and gave us everything they had. We had to take their punches and then punch back."

Corry and Meg Lucas each finished with 14 points for Buffalo. Lucas also grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

Junior guard Leah Middleton chipped in nine points and four rebounds while fellow junior guard Yanniah Boyd finished with seven points.

Free throws played a major role in the game. While Binghamton was 23-of-27 (85.2 percent) from the line, Buffalo shot only 68.2 percent (15-of-22).

The Bulls held a 47-39 rebounding margin but the Bearcats recorded 13 steals and scored 17 of their points off of turnovers.

Binghamton hosts Marist next Saturday at 2 p.m.
