Tymu Chenery snapped a 61-61 tie with a driving layup high off the glass with 10 seconds left and Binghamton men's basketball (11-12, 3-5 America East) upended UAlbany (11-12, 3-5 AE) 65-61 Saturday night at Broadview Center.
After a Great Danes' miss and subsequent shot clock violation gave the ball back to Binghamton with 38 seconds left, Chenery held the ball at the top of the key before driving to the hoop. With 13 seconds left, he drove to the right side and lofted a high banking shot that swished home.
Albany looked to tie in the closing seconds but senior post player
Nehemiah Benson got a hand on an entry pass and outhustled the Great Danes' player for the ball. He made a pair of free throws with 1.6 seconds left to seal the win.
The second half saw 10 lead changes and Binghamton had to regroup after losing a double-digit lead early in the period. The Bearcats trailed 57-52 with 5:24 left before closing the game with a deciding 13-4 run. Chenery scored seven points in the closing five minutes and Benson added four.
With the team's second straight win, Binghamton moved into a tie for fifth place in the standings halfway through the conference slate.
"This 'not today' mantra has stuck with us," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "It was a grind-it-out win tonight. We knew it would be a tough atmosphere but we stayed the course and were able to pull out a big-time road win. We are starting to get it that we have to do it together. Our guys on the bench are giving us tremendous energy and that's what we need. It takes all 14 guys to be pulling for each other and playing together and we can do some special things."
Benson led the Bearcats with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Sophomore forward
Gavin Walsh churned out 15 points and 15 rebounds – his league-leading 10
th double-double of the season. Chenery wound up with 12 points, six boards, four assists and three blocks and senior point guard
Wes Peterson, Jr. added 11 points and three assists.
The Bearcats were strong out of the gate and built a 22-12 cushion 11 minutes in. All five starters got on the board early and Walsh led a determined effort on the glass. Albany trimmed the margin down to four midway through the period but the Bearcats doubled up the Danes over the final 4+ minutes (12-6) and carried a 36-26 lead into half. Binghamton was plus 7 on the boards and played aggressive offense, which led to 14 trips to the free throw line in the opening period. Walsh totaled 12 points and seven boards in the period.
Binghamton begins a two-game homestand next week by hosting UMass Lowell Thursday night at the Events Center.
