Women’s Basketball Defeated 65-54 by UAlbany

Pucci turns in 13-point, 11-rebound, five-assist performance

VESTAL, N.Y. Kayla Cooper finished with a game-high 21 points, leading UAlbany (18-4, 8-1 AE) to a 65-54 win over Binghamton (11-11, 3-6 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The game marked Binghamton 's annual Throwback Game, in which they wore Colonial uniforms in tribute to their nickname up until the 1999-00 season.

Cooper, who came into the game ranked second in the America East with 17.5 points per game, shot 9-of-12 from the field and swished all three of her free throws. She also turned in a team-best nine rebounds, made two steals and recorded a block and an assist.

Kaci Donovan added 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the winning effort. Lilly Phillips, meanwhile, chipped in 13 points and blocked a pair of shots.

For Binghamton, sophomore guard Bella Pucci finished with a team-high 13 points, grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and came up with a game-high and career-best five steals. She also added a pair of assists. From the field, Pucci was 6-of-12. The double-double was her second of the season.

Also reaching double figures for Binghamton were redshirt junior guard Jadyn Weltz and junior guard Kaia Goode. Weltz scored 11 points to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists while Goode finished with 10 points and three steals.

UAlbany got the separation it needed in the first period. The Great Danes scored the first 12 points of the game and led 26-11 through 10 minutes. Cooper, Donovan and Phillips combined to score 19 of those points. During that opening period, the Great Danes shot 69.2 percent from the field (9-of-13) and nailed five of their six three-point field goal shots (83.3 percent).

From there, UAlbany built its lead to as much as 44-20 with 8:14 left in the third period when Phillips finished a fast break with a layup.

Binghamton, however, regrouped from their slow start to score 34 points in the second half. It shot 44 percent (12-of-27) during that stretch. In addition, Binghamton outscored the Great Danes 11-0 over the final five minutes of play.

"That's a tough UAlbany team," head coach Mary Grimes said. "They can score inside. They can score outside. They started off the game hitting threes and they were just hot. We talked in the locker room about playing a whole game like we are down by 20 points because that is what got us going. We have to understand that every game is important from here on out."

Sophomore forward Leah Middleton added eight points for Binghamton.

The Great Danes shot 47.1 percent from the field (24-of-51) and made all nine of their free throw attempts. Binghamton finished 20-of-54 (37.0 percent) for the game.

Binghamton travels to UMass Lowell on Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.
