Softball Goes 2-0 in Day One at Madeira Beach

Bearcats hold off Butler 3-2, defeat Bellarmine 3-1

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Junior pitchers Brianna Roberts and Olivia Kennedy each recorded a complete-game victory, leading Binghamton (7-5) to a sweep during the opening day of the Make-It-Happen Games at the Madeira Beach Recreation Center. The Bearcats - who have now won three straight games - edged Butler (9-2) 3-2 in their first game before beating Bellamine (2-6) 3-1 in the finale.

Roberts scattered two runs on six hits and struck out a season-high seven batters against Butler to improve to 4-1 on the season. Up until the top of the seventh inning, she had pitched 20 straight scoreless innings, which is the third-longest stretch by a Binghamton player during its 24-year NCAA Division I era. Michelle Weeks threw 24 and 21 scoreless innings respectively - both during the 2003 season.

Kennedy, meanwhile, allowed one run on three hits and struck out four batters against Bellarmine to raise her record to 2-3. She ended the game strong, retiring 10 of the last 11 batters.

Offensively, the Bearcats were led by graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos, who went 4-for-8 during the day (.500) and scored a pair of runs. She is now batting a team-best .439 this year and has hit safely in her last four games.

Fellow graduate student outfielder Lindsey Walter finished the day 2-for-6 (.333) and also scored twice. Junior first baseman Emma Lawson went 2-for-5 (.400) with an RBI while freshman designated player Rache Carey was 3-for-6 (.500).

Santos scored the Bearcats' first run against Butler when she stole home in the bottom of the third inning. One inning later, redshirt sophomore shortstop Akira Kopec padded the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single. Walter then made it 3-0 when she scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Bulldogs broke the shutout when Ella White belted a two-run triple with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Roberts, however, regrouped and struck out the final two batters of the game.

Gwen Baker took the loss for Butler, dropping her record to 3-1.

Against Bellarmine, the Bearcats got all the runs they'd need in the bottom of the first inning. Junior first baseman Emma Lawson drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly. The other two runs came courtesy of a passed ball.

Megan Konerman of Bellarmine broke the shutout in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI ground out.

Kelsie Houchens was tagged with the loss and is now 1-1.

Binghamton continues its stay at the Make-It-Happen Games on Saturday against Bethune-Cookman (11 a.m.) and Bellarmine (4 p.m.).

NOTES: Lawson is now batting .424 this season and leads the Bearcats with nine RBI.
