Softball Sweeps Pair of Games at Stetson Tournament

Bearcats edge FDU 2-1, defeat UTC 9-1 in five innings

DELAND, Fla. – Junior first baseman Emma Lawson drove in five runs and junior catcher Elisa Allen finished with three RBI, leading Binghamton (2-2) to a 2-0 record in the second day of the Stetson/Frank Griffin Classic on Saturday at Patricia Wilson Field. The Bearcats held on for a 2-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in their first game and recorded a 9-1, five-inning victory over defending Southern Conference champion Tennessee-Chattanooga (UTC) in the finale.

Lawson went 4-for-6 on the day with a pair of doubles. She also scored twice in the game against UTC. Through the first two days of the Frank Griffin Classic, Lawson is batting a team-best .583 (7-for-12) and has belted four doubles.

Allen, meanwhile, was 2-for-6 (.333) with a home run. She leads the Bearcats with a pair of home runs so far this weekend. Allen is also tied with Lawson for the team lead with five RBI.

Also coming through at the plate for the Bearcats on Saturday was graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos. She went 3-for-6 with a double and scored twice. Santos has hit safely in all four games the Bearcats have played at the Frank Griffin Classic.

"It was good to bounce back and get two wins today," head coach Jess Bump said. "UTC is a NCAA regional team from last year that beat a lot of good teams last year. It was great to see a good offensive breakout game, with both solid defense and a good pitching performance on the other side of the ball."

Lawson drove in both of the Bearcat runs against FDU with a two-run single in the top of the first inning. The Knights, however, cut the lead in half with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning.

On the mound, junior Brianna Roberts and graduate student Lindsey Walter did not allow an earned run. Roberts went the first four innings, struck out six batters and raised her record to 1-1. Walter followed with three scoreless innings to record her first save of the season.

Taking the loss was Julia Swan, whose record fell to 0-2.

Lawson and Santos each finished with a pair of hits against the Knights. Santos also made a sliding catch in center field in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve the victory.

Against UTC, Allen opened the scoring with her second two-run home run in as many days. One inning later, Lawson belted an RBI double and redshirt sophomore Akira Kopec followed with a two run double, stretching the Binghamton lead to 5-0.

After the Mocs got a run back in the bottom of the third inning, Binghamton reeled off four more runs in its next at-bat. Lawson cleared the bases with a three-run double (one of the runs came on an error) and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Allen.

From there, junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy was able to finish off the game in five innings. She scattered one run on five hits and recorded five strikeouts to win her first decision of the season.

The loss was tagged to Alyssa Lavdis, who dropped her first decision of the year.

Of the Bearcats nine hits against UTC, seven of them went for extra bases.

Junior outfielder Bella Farina was 1-for-2 against the Mocs with a triple, a walk and a run scored. Santos and senior third baseman Sarah Rende were also 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Binghamton wraps up its weekend at the Frank Griffin Classic with a 10 a.m. rematch against FDU on Sunday.
