Softball wraps up weekend with 6-1 win over FDU

Bearcats win third straight game, improve to 3-2

DELAND, Fla. – Junior first baseman Emma Lawson and graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos each finished with two RBI, lifting Binghamton (3-2) to a 6-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson (0-5) in the final day of the Stetson/Frank Griffin Classic on Sunday morning at Patricia Wilson Field. The victory gives the Bearcats three straight victories to end the weekend.

Lawson capped a stellar tournament with a two-run single in the bottom of the second inning that gave the Bearcats a 3-0 lead. She finished the weekend batting a team-best .533 (8-for-15) with four doubles and a team-high seven RBI.

Santos, who finished the game 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs, keyed a three-run bottom of the third inning that padded Binghamton's lead to 5-0. She delivered a two-run single and scored one batter later on a RBI single by fellow graduate student outfielder Lindsey Walter.

For the weekend, Santos hit .412 (7-for-17), scored five times and had a pair of extra-base hits. She hit safely in all five games.

Santos and Walter both were standouts on the defensive side of the field as well against FDU. In the top of the sixth inning, Walter stabbed a line drive that was hit to center field and Santos made an over-the-shoulder catch in right field.

On the mound, sophomore pitcher Delaney Glover tossed five shutout innings to get the win in her first decision of the year. She completed the weekend having pitched 9.0 scoreless innings.

Freshman pitcher Savanna McHale made her debut during the final 2.0 innings. She held the Knights to one run on two hits.

The loss was tagged to Jamie Sencion, whose record fell to 0-1.

"It's always good to fly home on Sunday with a win," head coach Jess Bump said. "We got better as the weekend went on and worked through some first-weekend jitters. Our pitching kept us in every game, our defense was incredible for the first time being outside and our offense got some momentum."

Sophomore catcher Elisa Allen posted the Bearcats' other RBI on Sunday when she drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first inning. She finished the weekend with a team-best two home runs and six RBI.

Senior third baseman Sarah Rende drew a career-high three walks on Sunday against FDU and had a double in her only other appearance at the plate. She ended the tournament 4-for-12 (.333) with a pair of doubles, five walks and an on-base percentage of .529.

Binghamton's pitching staff compiled an ERA of 1.31 and held its opponents to a .252 batting average over the five games at Stetson.

Binghamton returns to the state of Florida this coming weekend when it takes part in the University of Florida's tournament on Friday-Sunday.
