HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team was defeated by Hofstra 15-5 Saturday at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Both
Liam Ferris and
Andrew Girolamo scored two goals for the Bearcats (0-3), while
Nolan Sharkey recorded his first collegiate goal in the fourth quarter.
Garrett Taylor, who came on in relief in goal for
Connor Winters at the start of the second quarter, made a career-high five saves.
The Pride (4-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead within the first four minutes of the game thanks to two goals from Trevor Natalie and a third by John Madsen. Ferris' first goal got Binghamton on the scoreboard to make it 3-1 at the 10:33 mark, but Hofstra responded with another three unanswered goals. The first two came from Rory Jones, while the third came from Natalie to complete his hat trick. After Girolamo put up his first goal of the day with 54 seconds remaining in the quarter, Jones scored with 23 seconds left to complete his hat trick and give Hofstra a 7-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
Hofstra continued its attack by scoring the first three goals in the second frame, which came from Natalie, Joey DeYoung and Madsen. Ferris scored his second goal of the game with 2:18 left in the half, but the Bearcats were unable to generate any more scoring as they went into halftime trailing 10-3.
The third quarter provided the fewest combined goals, as Hofstra extended its lead to 12-3 off tallies from Drew Bogardus and Anthony Mollica. Binghamton's lone goal in the quarter came from Girolamo with 3:07 remaining. Hofstra ultimately took a 12-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
The final frame began with the Pride up a man after
Nolan Sharkey was called for a slashing penalty at the end of the third quarter. Hofstra capitalized on the man-advantage with a goal from Marsden at 14:28. Binghamton's final goal of the game came at the 7:10 mark when
Nolan Sharkey received a pass near the crease from
Gage Adams and fired in his first goal of his collegiate career. Up 13-5, Hofstra finished the game with two goals from Blake Cooling and Gerard Kane to secure the win. Shea Kennedy made 13 saves in goal for the Pride to hand the Bearcats their third loss of the season.
Other Notes
• Ferris tied for the team lead in ground balls at four along with
Anthony Bilello and
Nolan Sharkey. Sharkey now leads the Bearcats in ground balls with 12 this season, already nearly catching his total of 15 from his freshman season in 2024.
• With his team-high two caused turnovers on Saturday,
Nolan Sharkey also now leads the Bearcats in that category with five this season.
• Ferris has registered a point in all 16 games he has played for the Bearcats dating back to the start of the 2024 season. He has also scored at least one goal in 15 of those games, including his last 12.
