Softball Splits DH at Mercer

Bearcats win opener 2-1, edged in nightcap 3-1

MACON, Ga. – Freshman designated player Rachel Carey and senior third baseman Sarah Rende each homered, highlighting Binghamton's doubleheader split against Mercer on Friday afternoon at Sikes Field. The Bearcats (13-9) rallied to win the first game 2-1 but the Bears (15-13) got even with a 3-1 decision in the finale.

With the Bearcats trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning of the first game, Carey led off the frame with a home run over the right-center field fence. Two batters later, Rende belted the go-ahead homer - also to right-center field.

For Carey, it marked her third straight game with a home run. The last time a Binghamton player homered in three straight games was Sara Herskowitz back on March 31-April 6, 2019.

Rende, meanwhile, homered for the third time in two games - having hit a pair of home runs against Fordham this past Sunday.

From there, junior pitcher Brianna Roberts was able to finish off the game. She got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to raise her record to 7-2.

Mercer pitcher Grace Roark held the Bearats to just two hits and allowed four base runners in the first game. Her record, however, fell to 3-4.

In the nightcap, Gabby Ellis scattered one run on three hits and also allowed just four base runners as the Bears evened the series. Her record is now 5-1.

Mercer gave Ellis all of the offensive support she'd need with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tori Hedgecock singled home the first run during that frame and later scored on a fielding error.

The Bearcats trimmed the deficit in half on an RBI single by junior first baseman Emma Lawson in the top of the third inning. The Bears, however, got that run back in the bottom of the fifth inning as Hedgecock scored for the second time during the game.

Ellis then wrapped up the game by retiring the final six Bearcat batters.

Junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy went the distance, recording eight strikeouts and allowing just a pair of earned runs. Her record, however, dropped to 3-6.

Binghamton and Mercer wrap up their series with an 11 a.m. game on Saturday.
