Softball Wins 10-5 at Mercer, Bump wins 100th Game

Allen belts grand slam, Lawson and Carey each drive in two runs

MACON, Ga. – Sophomore catcher Elisa Allen hit a grand slam and junior first baseman Emma Lawson and freshman designated player Rachel Carey each had a pair of RBI, powering Binghamton (14-9) to a 10-5 win over Mercer (15-14) in the final game of a non-conference weekend series on Saturday at Sikes Field. With the victory, the Bearcats take the weekend series 2-1 and have now won three of the last four contests.

The Bearcats' win also marked the 100th victory for head coach Jess Bump since she became the head coach of her alma mater three years ago. She is just the third Binghamton head coach to reach the milestone and her current record is now 100-70.

It was a seven-run top of the fifth inning that proved to be the difference in Saturday's game. The Bearcats entered the frame trailing 3-0 but after a two-run single by Lawson and RBI single by senior third baseman Sarah Rende, Allen drilled her grand slam.

The seven runs is the most scored by the Bearcats in an inning this season. Allen's grand slam is the Bearcats' second of the season, with Carey hitting the other one back on March 7 against Fordham.

Carey came to bat with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning on Saturday. She proceeded to drill a two-run double, padding the Binghamton advantage to 9-3.

Mercer got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Parris Wiggs. The Bearcats, however, answered in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos to go up 10-5.

Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts came on in relief and pitched the final four innings. She is now 8-2 so far this season. Taking the loss was Gabby Ellis, whose record fell to 5-2.

Lawson went 3-for-4 in the win and finished the weekend hitting a team-best .400 (4-for-10) with three RBI. Rende was 2-for-4 on Saturday to finish the series 3-for-10 (.300) with a home run and two RBI.

Sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig was 2-for-3 in the win and scored a pair of runs.

With her grand slam against Mercer, Allen now leads the America East with six home runs and 21 RBI.

Binghamton opens America East play next Saturday and Sunday at home against UAlbany.

NOTES: Michelle Johnston won a program-record 242 games from 2010-21. Holly Brown compiled 225 victories from 1996-06 … Roberts leads the America East in wins, ERA (1.98) and is tied with teammate Olivia Kennedy for first with 56 strikeouts.
