Softball Sweeps UAlbany 12-4 and 14-2

Bearcats club seven home runs in first home games of the year

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton (16-9, 2-0 AE) hit seven home runs and batted .491 as a team, highlighting its 12-4, 14-2 sweep over UAlbany (7-15, 0-2 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex Softball Facility. Both of the games were decided in five innings.

With the victories, the Bearcats have now won five of their last six games and have scored 10+ runs in three straight outings. The 14 runs scored in Saturday's nightcap represent Binghamton's highest run total since plating 28 runs against Saint Peter's back on March 25, 2018. In addition, the last time the Bearcats scored 10+ in three straight games came back on March 27-30, 2016.

In the second game alone against UAlbany, Binghamton hit five home runs. That represents its highest total in a game since it homered a school-record six times against Hartford on March 26, 2011.

"It was a great day," head coach Jess Bump said. "Today is what we have been building towards for a long time and I'm happy the girls came out and played good softball."

Against UAlbany on Saturday, junior first baseman Emma Lawson and sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig each homered twice. Lawson, whose two home runs came in the nightcap, finished the day 3-for-5 (.600), scored three times and drove in three runs. Dodig, meanwhile, belted a three-run home run in each game, hit .500 (3-for-6), posted a team-high six RBI and scored four times.

Also homering against the Great Danes were freshman designated player Rachel Carey, senior third baseman Sarah Rende and sophomore pinch hitter Sami Levine. Carey finished the day with a team-best .833 batting average (5-for-6), had a pair of extra-base hits and drove in five runs.

The turning point of the doubleheader came during the bottom of the fourth inning of the first game, when Binghamton broke open a 4-4 tie with eight runs. Dodig opened the scoring during the frame when she came home on a triple by graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos. Dodig also capped the scoring in that same inning with the first of her two three-run homers. In between, Carey had an RBI single and junior outfielder Bella Farina smacked a two-run double.

From there, junior pitcher Brianna Roberts was able to hold UAlbany scoreless in the top of the fifth inning. Her record is now 9-2. Kate Powers was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 4-3.

Santos - who finished the day 4-for-7 (.571) - and Carey each had three hits during the opener.

In the nightcap, the Bearcats reeled off three more big innings at the plate. Binghamton scored four times in both the second and fourth innings as well as five times in the third inning.

Graduate student outfielder Lindsey Walter highlighted the second inning with a two-run triple. She later scored on a RBI single by Carey.

Rende and Lawson homered during the third inning and Dodig hit her second three-run home run of the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth inning. Levine then capped the scoring two batters later with her first home run of the season.

On the mound, junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy struck out eight batters during the second game and raised her record to 5-6. Taking the loss was Hayley Wieczerzak, who is now 2-4.

Walter and Farina each finished the day 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI. Walter scored four runs while Farina came across the plate three times.

Binghamton travels to UMBC next weekend for a three-game conference series.

NOTES: Roberts now has 29 career victories and is tied for sixth place in program history with Rayn Gibson (2017-21) … Rende is now in sole possession of 10th place all time with 17 career home runs.
