Softball Heads to UMBC for AE Series

STORY LINES

- Binghamton (16-9, 2-0 AE) swept UAlbany 12-4 and 14-2 in its conference-opening doubleheader last Saturday. Freshman designated player Rachel Carey - the current America East Rookie of the Week - hit a team-best .833 (5-for-6), homered and drove in five runs. Sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig and junior first baseman Emma Lawson, meanwhile, each homered twice.

- The Bearcats enter the weekend with a RPI of No. 85 out of 309 Division I softball programs. Binghamton was also ranked No. 25 in the D1Softball Mid-Major poll on March 5.

- As a team, Binghamton leads the America East in both pitching (2.98 ERA) and defense (.964). The Bearcats are also second in the conference in batting (.267).

- Lawson leads the America East with a .384 batting average, a .452 on-base percentage as well as seven doubles. She is also second with 21 RBI. Carey and sophomore catcher Elisa Allen are tied for first with six home runs. Allen has also driven in a conference-best 22 runs while Carey is third with 20 RBI.

- Graduate student Brianna Santos is sixth in the America East in batting (.360), is first with 31 hits and is tied for second with 18 runs scored. She is also tied for second with a pair of triples.

- On the mound, junior pitcher Brianna Roberts is 9-2 with a 2.14 ERA. She leads the America East in wins, ERA and is fourth with 60 strikeouts. Fellow junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy is second with 68 strikeouts.

- Heading into the weekend series at UMBC, the Bearcats have scored 10+ runs in three straight games as well as in four of their last six outings. Binghamton has averaged 8.67 runs per game during that stretch.

- UMBC (8-20, 2-1 AE) took two of three games against visiting UMass Lowell last weekend in its opening conference series. Kya Matter - the current America East Pitcher of the Week - went 2-0 with a 1.12 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 18.2 innings against the River Hawks.

- The Retrievers are fifth in the America East in both batting (.224) and fielding (.942). They are also sixth with a collective ERA of 5.40.

- Matter leads the America East with 67 strikeouts and is tied for third with five victories. At the plate, Haley Luginbill is fourth in batting (.364) while Emily Riggs is tied for first with six home runs and is tied for sixth with 18 RBI.

- Binghamton leads the all-time series against UMBC 38-28. Last season, the Bearcats swept a three-game series against the visiting Retrievers March 29-30. Roberts won both of her starts while Dodig hit .571 during the three games.

Binghamton has hit a pair of grand slams this season - freshman designated player Rachel Carey against Fordham on March 7 and sophomore catcher Elisa Allen against Mercer on March 15. Both grand slams came with two outs.

Against Fordham on March 7, Binghamton came from six runs down (7-1) to win 8-7. It marked the largest comeback during the Bearcats' 24-year Division I era.

Junior first baseman Emma Lawson has posted a team-best seven multiple-RBI performances so far this season. She has driven in three runs three times.

Graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos has turned in a team-best 10 multiple-hit games so far this season. She had a career-best four hits against Providence on Feb. 16.

Since moving into the Bearcats Sports Complex Softball Facility in 2013, Binghamton has gone 84-47 on its home field. This includes a 60-26 mark in America East games.

Fourth-year head coach Jess Bump has gone 102-70 at her alma mater. She is one of only three coaches in Binghamton program history to win at least 100 games - a feat she accomplished against Mercer on March 15.
