Men’s Lacrosse’s Valiant Comeback Falls Short at No. 12 Harvard

Gage Adams scores five goals, Liam Ferris adds four in 17-12 loss for the Bearcats

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team saw its four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of No. 12 Harvard as the Bearcats were defeated 17-12 Saturday at Jordan Field.

Gage Adams scored five goals in Binghamton's first-ever game against the Crimson, while Liam Ferris added four. Both totals are the most goals each player has scored in a game this season. Connor Winters also stopped a season-high 19 shots in goal for the Bearcats, just four days after making his previous season high of 17 saves against St. Bonaventure.

Trailing 15-6 with 39 seconds left in the third quarter, the Bearcats put together five unanswered goals, including three in a row by Adams, to bring the score to 15-11 with 9:35 left in regulation. But Binghamton's comeback ultimately fell short.

It was Adams who helped the Bearcats strike first with a goal at 12:46 in the first quarter to put Binghamton up 1-0. After three consecutive goals by the Crimson, Ferris posted his first tally of the day at 5:39. Harvard picked up one more goal at the last second of the opening quarter by Jack Speidell to extend its lead to 4-2.

The Bearcats kept up with the Crimson early in the second quarter. Following a Harvard goal by Teddy Malone, Andrew Girolamo responded with a strike of his own to make it 5-3 Crimson at 11:34. The Crimson took control of the game from then on, scoring the final five goals of the half to go into halftime up 10-3.

Harvard opened the third quarter with two more goals to extend its lead to 12-3. While Adams and Ferris each got a goal of their own to bring it to 12-5, the Crimson added two tallies of their own to go back up 14-5. Gavin Jacobsen for Binghamton and Jackson Greene for Harvard each traded a goal after that to make it 15-6.

That's when Binghamton made its run. To start it, Adams set up Ferris for a goal with two seconds remaining in the quarter, making it 15-7 Harvard going into the fourth. Binghamton quickly carried its momentum into the next quarter with Brady Sharkey scoring 17 seconds in to make it 15-8. Adams put up the next three Bearcat goals, including his last two in a span of 43 seconds to bring the Bearcats up to 15-11.

The score remained that until there was 4:19 remaining, when Sam King scored to bring Harvard's lead to 16-11. Ferris got that goal back for the Bearcats with his fourth tally of the day at 3:30, but the Crimson added insurance with a goal from Logan Ip at 2:48. Harvard then kept Binghamton off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game to take home the victory.

Other Notes
•    Saturday was the first time that Adams scored at least five goals in a game since April 29, 2023, when the attackman posted five tallies in a 15-14 win for the Bearcats over UAlbany. That was one of four instances during that season where Adams scored at least five goals in a game.
•    Adams gained ground on multiple all-time rankings for Binghamton men's lacrosse. With his five goals, the senior is up to 72 for his career at Binghamton, bringing him up to the fourth-most in program history after he passed Kevin Winkoff's 70. Adams also registered the 12th hat trick of his Binghamton career on Saturday, putting him in a tie with Michael Antinozzi for the third-most in program history.
•    Ferris recorded his 10th hat trick with the Bearcats, which moves him into sole possession of the fourth-most in program history, as he passed Tom Moore's nine.
•    Nolan Sharkey shined on defense for Binghamton, leading all players in caused turnovers (5) and tying for the lead in ground balls (5). The five caused turnovers are not only a career high for the sophomore, but they are also the most recorded in a game by a Binghamton player this season.

Up Next
Binghamton enters the final stretch of its regular season with four games against America East opponents. First, the Bearcats host defending America East champion UAlbany on Saturday, April 5 at 3 p.m.

Next Saturday's contest is the JR Gaudet Youth Game. The Bearcats will honor Gaudet, a former player of theirs who passed away while in the line of duty for the Binghamton Fire Department on Feb. 12.

All of Binghamton's home men's lacrosse games this season include free admission on behalf of Station 45 American Chop House. Station 45 is the presenting sponsor of Bearcats men's lacrosse.
