Softball Beats Fordham 13-3 in final game at JMU Invite

Bearcats club four home runs, score most runs in a game this season

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior third baseman Sarah Rende homered twice while junior outfielder Bella Farina and freshman designated player Rachel Carey also homered, powering Binghamton (12-8) to a 13-3, 6-inning win over Fordham (7-12) in its final game at the James Madison (JMU) Invitational on Sunday morning at Bank of the James Field at Veterans Memorial Park. The four home runs and 13 runs both represent season-highs for the Bearcats.

Farina belted a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, giving Binghamton an early 3-0 lead. She finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and scored a game-high three runs. For the weekend at the JMU Invitational, she hit .333 (5-for-15) with two home runs and six RBI.

Rende, whose two home runs and 10 total bases both represent her career highs, belted a solo homer in the top of the second inning, putting the Bearcats ahead 4-0. She then capped a five-run top of the third inning with a two-run homer, padding the Bearcats' lead to 9-1. Rende finished the weekend 4-for-12 (.333) with her two home runs as well as RBI.

Carey, meanwhile, highlighted a three-run top of the sixth inning with a two-run home run, giving the Bearcats a 12-3 cushion. Two innings earlier, she drove in another run on an RBI groundout, which at the time gave the Bearcats a 10-3 lead. For the weekend, Carey hit a team-best .412 (7-for-17) with three home runs and nine RBI.

Also driving in three runs for the Bearcats on Sunday was sophomore catcher Elisa Allen. She posted a two-run single during Binghamton's five-run outburst in the third inning and later doubled home the final run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Allen finished the weekend with four RBI.

Junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy went the distance against Fordham to record her second win of the weekend. She struck out eight batters in 6.0 innings against the Rams. For the weekend, Kennedy fanned 25 batters in just 16.0 innings of work.

Junior first baseman Emma Lawson was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and scored twice on Sunday. During the five games at JMU, she hit .400 (6-for-15) with three RBI and a team-best seven runs scored.

As a team, Binghamton finished the weekend with seven home runs and batted .298 as a team. In the process, the Bearcast pounded out 13 extra-base hits.

"It was good to get a full team offensive effort to go home with a win on Sunday," head coach Jess Bump said. "All weekend, we had great at bats and were hitting the ball hard, so it was good to see it all come together. Olivia Kennedy had a great weekend on the mound for us, which gave our offense some momentum to get things going."

Up next for Binghamton is a three-game series at Mercer this coming Friday-Saturday.

NOTES: Rende is the second Binghamton player to homer twice in a game this season. Allen homered twice against Butler back on March 2 … the 10 total bases by Rende is the most by a Binghamton player since Allen had the same total against St. Bonaventure on April 9, 2024.
