Baseball belts four home runs, topples NJIT 13-6

Bade, Sullivan go deep twice each; Bearcats win second straight over league-leading Highlanders

VESTAL, N.Y. - Seniors Devan Bade and Evin Sullivan belted two home runs apiece and Binghamton baseball (17-17, 7-7 America East) blew past visiting NJIT (18-18, 7-4 AE) 13-6 Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Stadium. With its third straight win, Binghamton evened both its overall and conference records.

Freshman starter Vincent Luther didn't allow an earned run in 4.1 innings and the Bearcats pulled away with runs in each of the final five innings. Up 1-0, Binghamton scored twice in the fourth and continued with four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, two in the seventh and a closing run in the eighth. NJIT outhit Binghamton 15-9 but the four home runs and 13 walks by Highlander pitchers tilted the advantage to the Bearcats.

Bade drove in five runs, thanks to a leadoff home run in the fourth, a 3-run home run in the fifth (8th) and a bases loaded walk in the seventh. With the barrage of runs driven in, Bade raised his team-high total to 34. Sullivan followed Bade in the lineup and went 3-for-3 with two home runs (8,9), four RBI and three runs scored. He hit a solo shot in the second inning to put the Bearcats ahead 1-0. Sullivan then hit another solo shot in the fifth and finished with a 2-out, 2-run double in the sixth.

Freshman center fielder Matt Bolton went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. He raised his team-high batting average to .370.

Luther was crafty on the hill, scattering seven hits and collecting five strikeouts. He lowered his season ERA to 3.97 in eight appearances. Redshirt freshman reliever Ben Griffith (W, 3-0) worked 3.0 innings and held NJIT to three hits and one run.

The game featured a 30-minute rain delay in the top of the sixth inning.

The teams close out the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
