Softball wins 3-1 at UMass Lowell, Finishes Off Sweep

Glover and Roberts hold River Hawks to four hits

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore pitcher Delaney Glover got the win on the mound and had the game-winning RBI at the plate, lifting Binghamton (25-11, 11-2 AE) to a 3-1 win over UMass Lowell (13-23, 5-9 AE) in an America East softball game on Saturday afternoon at the River View Athletic Field. With the victory, the Bearcats sweep their third straight conference series and have now won their last eight games.

Glover went the first 5.0 innings against the River Hawks, scattering one run on four hits and striking out a career-best six batters. Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts then closed out the game with a pair of scoreless innings.

In the top of the second inning, with the Bearcats ahead 1-0, Glover was called upon to pinch hit with the bases loaded. She recorded a sacrifice fly and with alert base running, Binghamton got another runner home on the same play.

The only other run scored by the Bearcats came in the top of the first inning - also with the bases loaded. Junior outfielder Bella Farina was hit by a pitch, forcing in the first run of the game.

Graduate student Brianna Santos was 2-for-4 (.500) and scored when Farina was hit by the pitch. She finished the series at UMass Lowell with a team-best .636 batting average (7-for-11).

Santos has a career-high, 14-game hitting streak. That is the third longest in program history, trailing only the 17-game hitting streaks turned in by Deannie Plemon (2010) and Gabby Bracchi (2014).

The Bearcats were able to protect their lead with a defense that turned in a season-high three double plays. The final two were recorded in the sixth and seventh innings.

Glover improved to 3-1 on the season while Roberts now has a pair of saves. Giana LaCedra went the distance and struck out eight batters, but her record dropped to 4-11.

Farina went 1-for-2 on Saturday. For the weekend, she was 3-for-8 (.375) with a double and three RBI.

Senior third baseman Sarah Rende went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. She was 4-for-8 (.500) during the weekend with a home run, two extra-base hits and a pair of RBI.

Binghamton returns home for a non-conference doubleheader against Cornell on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
