Softball Hosts UMBC in final regular-season home series

STORY LINES

- Binghamton (26-12, 11-2 AE) split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Cornell on Wednesday. The Bearcats won the opener 6-2 but lost the nightcap 4-1 as their season-high, nine-game winning streak came to an end. Junior first baseman Emma Lawson and sophomore catcher Elisa Allen each drove in three runs during the day while graduate student outfielder Lindsey Walter hit a team-best .571 (4-for-7).

- The Bearcats are ranked No. 24 in the current D1Softball.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. It marks the second time this season that they have been ranked. Binghamton was No. 25 in the March 5 poll. In addition, Binghamton is No. 96 out of 309 Division I softball programs in the RPI. 


- Graduate student outfielder Brianna Santos leads the America East in batting (.388), runs scored (31), hits (52) and is tied for first with three triples. Allen is first with 15 home runs, a .766 slugging percentage and a 1.148 OPS. Lawson, meanwhile, is tops with 38 RBI.

- On the mound, junior pitcher Brianna Roberts is 14-2 with a 2.06 ERA. She leads the America East in both wins and ERA and ranks second with 112 strikeouts. Roberts has also thrown five complete-game shutouts. Fellow junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy ranks sixth with seven victories, fifth with 95 strikeouts and enters the weekend having thrown back-to-back shutouts.

- Binghamton as a team ranks first in the America East in both batting (.297) and pitching (2.76 ERA). The Bearcats are also second in fielding percentage (.962).

- Binghamton enters the series against UMBC with a conference-best 49 home runs. The program record of 50 home runs was set in 2011 and tied last year.

- Allen's 15 home runs is tied for the program's single season record. Jessica Phillips set the current mark during the 2010 season. 

- The Bearcats will honor their three graduating players during their annual Senior Day ceremony on Sunday. Senior outfielder Sarah Rende, Santos and Walter form this year's class. All three of them have at least 100 hits during their career and been named all-conference at least once during their career. 

- UMBC (17-23, 11-4 AE) took two out of three games against visiting Bryant last weekend. Amaya Carroll hit a grand slam in the final game against the Bulldogs while Kya Matter fired a four-hit shutout during the Retrievers' other win in the series.

- Matter leads the America East with 122 strikeouts, is second with 12 wins and ranks sixth with a 3.70 ERA. Jerzie Nutile is tied for second with 10 home runs while Hailey Luginbill is fourth with 30 RBI.

- UMBC as a team ranks fourth in the America East in batting (.249) and fifth in pitching (4.85 ERA). The Retrievers are also third with a .953 fielding percentage.

- Earlier in the season, UMBC took two out of three games against visiting Binghamton (March 29-30). The Bearcats won the opener 9-6 in eight innings but the Retrievers answered with 3-2 and 11-10 walk-off victories. Allen homered in each of the three games but Nutile belted a pair of grand slams during the series.
