Softball Sweeps Colgate 6-1 and 21-2

Bearcats hit 10 home runs - including record seven in nightcap

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Binghamton (31-12) clubbed 10 home runs - including a program-record seven in the second game - highlighting its 6-1, 21-2 sweep over Colgate (18-30) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Eaton Street Field. The victory extends the Bearcats' winning streak to five games and clinches back-to-back 30+ win seasons for the first time in program history.

The seven home runs by the Bearcats in the second game broke the previous mark of six home runs, which was set at Hartford on March 26, 2011. In addition, the 21 runs represents the third-highest total in program history while the 20 hits rank second behind the 22 hits against Saint Peters on March 25, 2018.

Sophomore catcher Elisa Allen hit four of the Bearcats' home runs and finished the day with 12 RBI. Her seven RBI in the second game tied the school record which was set by Lisa Cadogan against Rider on March 8, 2015.

For the season, Allen now has 22 home runs and moves into sole possession of second place all-time in the history of the America East Conference. In addition, her 55 RBI breaks Cadogan's 2015 single-season program record of 53 RBI. Furthermore, Allen's RBI total ranks fourth all time in America East history.

Allen finished the doubleheader 5-for-8, scored six times and had a slugging percentage of 2.250. She now has eight home runs in the past seven games.

Hitting two of Binghamton's other home runs against Colgate was junior first baseman Emma Lawson. She finished the day 3-for-6 (.500), drove in three runs and extended her hitting streak to a team-best and career-high 11 games.

Lawson continues to lead the America East in batting (.397), is second to Allen with 42 RBI and a .679 slugging percentage, has homered seven times and ranks second with a .444 on-base percentage.

Also homering for the Bearcats were sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig, junior outfielder Bella Farina as well as freshman pinch hitters Savanna McHale and Emilia Podeszwa

Dodig hit a team-best .800 (4-for-5) during the day and also led the Bearcats with an .887 on-base percentage. The home run was her fourth of the season.

Farina, who now has five home runs, went 2-for-3 (.667) and finished with an on-base percentage of .800. She now has six home runs and 22 RBI this season.

McHale and Podeszwa each hit the first home run of their careers. Podeszwa's home run also represented her first career hit.

Allen drove in five of the six runs in the first game. She smacked a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and had a three-run blast in the fifth inning. Lawson, meanwhile, led off the seventh inning with a solo shot.

Junior pitcher Olivia Kennedy improved to 9-8 with the win while Maya Servedio dropped to 8-17 with the loss.

It was a 10-run top of the first inning of the second game that set the tone for the Bearcats. Included in the frame were two-run home runs by Lawson and Farina as well as a three-run shot by Allen. While the three-run homer by Allen capped the scoring in the inning, she also drove in the initial run with a RBI double.

The 10 runs represent the Bearcats' highest single-inning total since also scoring 10 runs in the first inning during the 2018 game against St. Peter's. In addition, the last time the Bearcats homered three times in an inning came on April 28, 2018 with Lauren Martinez, Sara Herskowitz and Makayla Alvarez doing the honors.

Dodig hit a two-run homer in the second inning and drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning. By that time, the Binghamton lead had reached 13-2.

The Bearcats hit their final three home runs - and scored their final six runs - in the top of the fourth inning. Allen, McHale and Podeswa each hit two-run shots.

Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts got the win, improving her record to 17-2. Her single-season victory total continues to rank fourth all time in Binghamton program history. Roberts also continues to lead the America East in both wins and ERA (2.08).

Taking the loss was Alexa Acker, whose record drops to 4-10.

Redshirt sophomore Akira Kopec hit .600 (3-for-5) against Colgate while graduate student outfielder Lindsey Walter was 4-for-7 (.571) and scored four times.

In addition to Kennedy and Roberts, sophomore pitcher Delaney Glover tossed a pair of shutout innings in the second game.

Binghamton hit .484 on the day to raise its season batting average to a conference-best .310. The Bearcats' also increased their single-season home run record to 63.

The Bearcats return to conference play with a three-game series at UAlbany on Friday-Saturday. The two teams will square off in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday followed by a single game at noon on Saturday.

NOTES: The school record for runs in a game is 33, against Hunter on May 8, 1987. Binghamton also scored 28 runs in the 2018 game against Saint Peters.
