Softball Beats Bryant 9-0, Finishes Off Sweep

Roberts fires two-hit shutout, Bearcats homer three times

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior pitcher Brianna Roberts threw a two-hit shutout and junior first baseman Emma Lawson drove in four runs, powering Binghamton (20-11, 6-2 AE) to a 9-0, five-inning victory over Bryant (11-21, 3-6 AE) in an America East softball game on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex Softball Facility. With the victory, the Bearcats complete the three-game weekend sweep over the Bulldogs, having won 10-2 and 8-6 on Friday.

Roberts, who now has four complete-game shutouts this season, allowed only a pair of singles, three total base runners and struck out four batters. She is now 11-2 and leads the America East in both wins and ERA (2.40). For the weekend, Roberts went 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA and struck out 17 batters in just 11.0 innings.

Lawson, meanwhile, was 2-for-3 with a home run on Saturday and tied her career high with the four RBI. She finished the weekend batting a team-best .556 (5-for-9) against Bryant and drove in seven runs. Lawson continues to lead the conference in batting (.386), RBI (.31) and OPS (1.078).

The Bearcats hit three home runs during Saturday's victory over Bryant. In addition to Lawson, sophomore catcher Elisa Allen smacked a two run homer and now leads the America East with 10 home runs so far this season. Junior outfielder Bella Farina, meanwhile, clubbed a three-run shot to extend her hitting streak to a career-high nine games.

Lawson singled home the first two runs during Saturday's game in the bottom of the first inning. Allen then made it 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning with her two-run shot that went well over the left-field fence.

Roberts' shutout was protected by a play at the plate in the top of the fourth inning. Allen got a perfect throw by sophomore second baseman Maddy Dodig off a single to right field and threw out Faith Valenzuela at home.

In the bottom of the same inning, the Bearcats blew the game open with five more runs. Lawson smacked her two-run shot during that frame and Farina capped the scoring with her three-run blast. That gave Roberts the run support she needed to finish the game in five innings.

"Today was good," head coach Jess Bump said. "Our offense is really clicking and the girls are feeling really confident. I think as long as we keep scoring runs every inning, we are going to continue to win games. I was really happy with how our pitchers bounced back this weekend after our UMBC series. This team is going to be tough to beat as long as we keep going."

Maddy Watcher took the loss and is now 3-7.

Graduate student outfielder Lindsey Walter went 1-for-3 and in the process, extended her hitting streak to a career-high 10 games. Fellow graduate student Brianna Santos was also 1-for-3, scored a pair of runs and stretched her hitting streak to nine games.

Although the Bearcats finished with just nine hits, they also drew eight walks. Freshman designated player Rachel Carey, senior third baseman Sarah Rende and sophomore shortstop Akira Kopec each drew two of them. Rende also singled in her only official time at bat.

Santos finished the weekend 4-for-9 (.444) while Farina went 3-for-7 (.429), drove in four runs, scored a team-best five runs and reached base five times.

Carey hit .400 (2-for-5) and hit a pair of solo home runs. She also drew four walks and scored four times. Allen, Rende and Kopec each hit .333 during the three games.

As a team, the Bearcats hit .377 against Bryant during the weekend and posted a 2.72 ERA.

Binghamton is scheduled to head to Le Moyne on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.

NOTES: Binghamton has now hit 39 home runs so far this season. The Bearcats have at least one home run in each of the past 10 games.
