CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Johannes Hanken Tjostheim scored in the 29th minute, lifting Boston College (1-0-0) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (0-1-0) in a non-conference men's soccer match on Thursday night at Alumni Stadium. In addition to the game being the Bearcats' season opener, it also marked their first contest against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) since 2023.
Hanken Tjostheim's heroics came when fired a shot from the top-left corner of the box into the upper-left part of the net. Ask Ekeland was credited with the assist.
The Bearcats made a furious rally in the closing minutes, firing a pair of shots during the last six minutes of play. In the 84th minute, a shot by sophomore forward DT Megliola from close range was saved by Eagles goalkeeper Andrej Borak.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Connor Cresswell made three saves in his first collegiate start. In the second minute, he made a save on a near breakaway from close range.
Total shots were 11-4 in favor of the Eagles but shots on goal were only by a 4-1 margin. Boston College also had a 54-46 percent advantage in possession time.
"I thought tonight was a pretty even match but they got a very good goal that was the difference," head coach Paul Marco said. "Our guys stuck to the plan and executed it well. Connor played well tonight in goal and we showed good competitive spirit throughout the match."
Binghamton travels to George Washington on Sunday for a noon game.
NOTE: Binghamton's last ACC game came against then No. 1 Syracuse on Aug. 28, 2023. The Orange won 3-0.
