Men’s Soccer Defeated 3-1 at George Washington

Balkey nets Bearcat goal in the 75th minute

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Louis Crofts scored a pair of second-half goals, powering George Washington (1-1-0) to a 3-1 victory over Binghamton (0-2-0) in a non-conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Athletic Fields. The game marked the Bearcats' second straight record contest to start the season.

With the Colonial nursing a 1-0 lead - courtesy of a goal by Babacar Fall in the ninth minute - Croft broke open the match with a goal in the 59th minute. Nico Medina was credited with the assist.

Junior midfielder Alex Balkey cut the Revolutionaries' lead in half in the 75th minute. He finished off a Bearcat possession that began beyond midfield and ended when he fired a shot from the left of the box. Sophomore back Ryan Gillon was credited with the assist.

Just 86 seconds later, however, Croft struck again as George Washington reclaimed its two-goal advantage. Omar Alsabagh assisted on the score.

Shots on goal favored the Revolutionaries 15-13 but the Bearcats had a 6-4 advantage on shots on goal. George Washington goalkeeper Tom Macauley made five saves in the winning effort.

Possession time favored George Washington by a 54-46 percent margin while Binghamton led in corner kicks 8-6.

"It's extremely disappointing that we dropped today's game," head coach Paul Marco said. "All of the goals we allowed came off of set pieces or defensive errors. We were outcompeted today and we needed to find a way to win or tie this match."

Binghamton's home opener is on Thursday against Mount St. Mary's (Md.) at 6:07 p.m.
