Men’s Soccer Beats Mount St. Mary’s 2-1 in Home Opener

Balkey nets game winner in 78th minute for second goal in as many games

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Alex Balkey scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute, lifting Binghamton (1-2-0) to a 2-1 win over Mount St. Mary's (0-1-1) in a non-conference men's soccer match on Thursday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats are now 13-5-1 in home openers since moving into their current facility in 2007.

Balkey, who has now scored in back-to-back games, broke a 1-1 tie when he fired the ball into the net from 10 yards out. Sophomore forward D.T. Megliola was credited with the assist after dribbling the ball down the right side of the field and firing a cross to Balkey.

"D.T. made a great run for the ball and served it up to me on a platter and I was able to volley it home, so it was all good from there," Balkey said.

Binghamton led for most of the match after junior forward Kevaughn Harris tipped in a cross by senior back Will Mahoney just 10 minutes into play. Mahoney's cross came from near the right corner flag and found Harris, who was stationed by the near post.

The Mountaineers, however, finally deadlocked the match on a goal by Eliot O'Neil in the 70th minute. Sherwin Chen was credited with the assist.

Graduate student goalkeeper Daniel Shannon, who transferred from UAlbany in the offseason, finished with six saves in his first start for Binghamton.

"I thought tonight was a terrific attack game with both teams creating great chances," head coach Paul Marco. "We got two great goals and our guys were good in the final third tonight when they needed to be."

Mt. St. Mary's outshot Binghamton 13-7 during the match and had a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Binghamton hosts No. 23 Hofstra on Sunday at 3 p.m.
