Women's soccer loses at Monmouth 2-0

Bearcats suffer first setback of season

WEST LONG BEACH, N.J. – Host Monmouth (2-2) scored two goals in a late eight-minute span and defeated Binghamton (2-1) 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn.

The CAA power Hawks snapped a scoreless tie in the 70th minute after a seemingly benign lateral dribble into the middle led to a perfect 30-yard shot to the top left corner. Just over eight minutes later, a thru ball on the right resulted in a 15-yard shot to the top netting.

Four minutes after going down 2-0, the Bearcats nearly got on the board when leading scorer Jahkaya Davis ripped a 22-yard shot off the crossbar.

Monmouth held an 18-15 shots edge. Junior keeper Rebecca Kessler made six saves.

"In many facets we can be pleased with the effort today," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "But of course ultimately we are disappointed with the result. We have a lot of respect for Monmouth as they're perennially one of the top teams in the region. They had stretches of the game and we had stretches as well. It was a well-played match with two high-quality sides, and credit to Monmouth for finding a couple special moments to have the difference. This game was a terrific test that will make us better. We now need to get much needed rest and recovery and get ready for a tough Marist side on Thursday."

In the first half, the Bearcats had some heavy pressure in the Hawks' box in the fifth minute with a corner kick and three shots. Junior forward Paige Luke had a good chance in the 15th minute but her 12-yard strike was saved.

In the second half, the Bearcats started with a strong flurry. A ball from sophomore Alexus Worrell to the right side of the box led to chance from junior back Megan Baker but her shot was blocked.

In the 48th minute, an inswinger corner kick from freshman back Mackenzie Brotherston bounced through heavy traffic to the far post, where it was tapped just wide.

Binghamton next plays at Marist Thursday afternoon.
