Men’s Soccer Edged 1-0 by Iona

Gaels net game winner in the 72nd minute

VESTAL, N.Y. – Enbiya Bolur scored an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute, lifting defending MAAC champion Iona (2-1-2) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (3-4-0) in a non-conference men's soccer match on Saturday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The game marked the Bearcats' second contest this season against a defending conference champion - having beaten CAA champion Hofstra 1-0 back on Aug. 31.

Bolur created his own shot from the top of the box. He dribbled through traffic and with his back to the goal, turned around and fired a shot into the lower-right corner of the net. It was his first goal of the season.

The Bearcats mounted a furious push for the equalizer, firing four shots over the final 15 minutes of play. Iona goalkeeper Josh Bells, however, made a pair of saves during that stretch to preserve the victory.

"We are disappointed not to have gotten at least a point from the game," head coach Paul Marco said. "We did well enough tonight to at least have gotten a point. They scored a very good goal but two defensive errors led to the goal, so that was disappointing. And then we don't collect a goal on their end of the field. There were a lot of balls that we should have put in the net. Just disappointed with the outcome but I am pretty pleased with how we played."

The Gaels held an 11-9 edge in total shots but shots on goal were even at 4-4.

Bells finished with four saves while graduate student goalkeeper Daniel Shannon made three stops for the Bearcats.

Binghamton travels to Central Connecticut next Saturday for a 4 p.m. match.
