Bearcats hold their own against Le Moyne, Niagara, Colgate in three-day event

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton women's tennis enjoyed a solid showing at the local Carousel Classic this weekend at Recreation Park. The Bearcats competed against Le Moyne, Niagara and Colgate in singles and doubles action.

The round-robin format was enhanced by a celebration of sport and community. The Classic, co-hosted by Tennis Charities of Binghamton and Life is Washable, Inc. also featured club sport competition and a youth clinic - all held at the courts at Recreation Park. On Friday, all the participating teams took part in the clinic, with more than 100 students from Horace Mann Elementary School receiving instruction and fellowship from the college student-athletes.

Senior Loren Cuomo went 2-0 in singles and freshman Angel Walia also won two singles matches. In doubles, Walia paired with junior Samantha Jaros to win both their matches.

The Bearcats went a combined 4-5 in doubles and 7-10 in singles.

"It was a wonderful weekend for a tournament," head coach Paul Caceres said. "We were blessed with beautiful weather and the assistance of Life is Washable and Tennis Charities of Binghamton made it a great event. The students from Horace Mann Elementary School seemed to enjoy it. It was good to get more doubles and singles matches in ahead of our upcoming tournament next weekend. We had a bunch of close matches, particularly in singles and we can work on some small adjustments to help put us ahead. Loren finished just outside the top 5 overall in the singles standings from the weekend and Samantha and Angel placed second overall in the doubles standings."

The Bearcats return to action this coming weekend with another multi-team event. Binghamton hosts the NateRentals.com Binghamton Championships up at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center. The event includes many of the Bearcats' Northeast Conference rivals and serves as the qualifier for the ITA Conference Masters Championship, held November 6-9 in San Diego.
