Volleyball Falls to Hofstra

Bearcats are defeated by the Pride 3-1 to close out the second day of the Black Knight Invitational

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Binghamton volleyball was taken down by Hofstra 3-1 Saturday to close out the second day of Army's Black Knight Invitational at Gillis Field House.

The Pride defeated the Bearcats for the second time in less than a week, having previously swept Binghamton at the Events Center on Aug. 31. In the rematch on Saturday, Hofstra prevailed 25-23, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-19.

After helping Binghamton get its first victory of the season Friday against Rider, Merima Smajlovic recorded a team-high 14 kills. Maya Coblentz-Brown, meanwhile, added a career-high 13. Alexandra Koleva also posted 32 assists, tying her season-high that she set against Fordham in Binghamton's first match of the year on Aug. 29.

The Bearcats were set on avenging their previous loss to the Pride, taking a 20-17 lead late in the first set. Hofstra, however, closed out the frame by scoring eight of the final 11 points to win the opening set. Binghamton kept it close in the second set as well, bringing themselves within one point at a 23-22 deficit. Hofstra then recorded two kills in a row to extend their lead to 2-0.

The Pride looked to complete their second sweep of the Bearcats within the week, holding on to a 22-20 lead in the third set. This time, Binghamton would get past Hofstra, as the Bearcats scored the final five points of the set. Both Coblentz-Brown and Smajlovic had one kill each during the run, while the Pride committed three errors, giving the Bearcats the frame.

Down 2-1, the Bearcats aimed to reach a fifth set for the third time this season. Hofstra would not allow that to happen, as the Pride led for the majority of the fourth set before winning 25-19 to take the match 3-1.

Binghamton closes out its weekend at the Black Knight Invitational by taking on Army on Sunday at 1 p.m.
