Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

Women's soccer outlasts Colgate 3-2, improves to 5-1-1

Worrell nets game-winner in 84th minute; Luke tallies three points as Bearcats continue to roll

VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Alexus Worrell broke a 2-2 tie with the game-winner in the 84th minute to lift Binghamton women's soccer (5-1-1) to a 3-2 home win over Colgate (1-3-3) Sunday afternoon at Bearcats Sports Complex.

The win extends Binghamton's best start to a season in eight years and stretches the team's unbeaten streak to four games. The teams combined for four second-half goals with the final three coming in a 15-minute flurry late in the game.

Junior forward Paige Luke tallied one goal and two assists to tie sophomore teammate Jahkaya Davis for the team and conference lead with 12 points. For Worrell, it was her second goal of the season - both game-winners (Lehigh).

With the clock winding down in a 2-2 tie, Binghamton began peppering the Colgate back line with the attack and the second of back-to-back corner kicks finally drew the winner. Sophomore midfielder Anna Buckwalter sent the inswinger from the left into the box, where Luke headed it on goal. The Raiders' keeper dropped down to make the initial save, but the rebound rolled to a charging Worrell, who hammered it home from four yards.

"It wasn't our best 45 minutes to open the game," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We wanted to come out with more intensity and fire in the second half and we played with more passion. It was great to get that first goal back and then roll from there. Overall I'm pleased with the second-half performance. We kept pushing for the winner and in that last 10 minutes we had three golden chances. We kept fighting for every inch and a good team like Colgate is going to make you do that. That's what it took today and we found a way."

Down 1-0 at half, the Bearcats evened the score in the 55th minute. Junior center back Sophia Garofalo sprung Megan Baker down the right side with a 40-yard ball. Baker dribbled into the box before sending a hard cross toward goal, where Luke headed it home from four yards while draped in Colgate defenders. It was Luke's fourth goal of the season.

In the 69th minute, Binghamton took a 2-1 lead on a goal from freshman back Ale Victoriano. Luke crossed the ball from the left and graduate midfielder Isabella Martillo skimmed it on to Victoriano, who settled it and found the net from eight yards. It was Victoriano's second goal in the last four games.

But Colgate answered five minutes later when a thru ball into the box was finished from seven yards out.

The Bearcats close their non-conference slate next Sunday at Cornell.
