Men’s Soccer Beats UMass Lowell 2-1

Meiner and Randazzo net Bearcat goals in first AE win

VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman back Jona Meiner and senior forward Anthony Randazzo each scored a goal, powering Binghamton (2-6-4, 1-1-1 AE) to a 2-1 win over UMass Lowell (5-4-2, 1-2-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Meiner's goal, which came in the 17th minute, was the first of his career. He got by the defense on the left wing and freshman forward Jan Guma got the ball to him through traffic. Meiner then broke into the box and fired the ball into the upper-right corner of the net.

UMass Lowell was able to deadlock the match at 1-1 in the 55th minute when Santiago Sommorrostro converted a free kick from just outside the box.

Randazzo then scored the unassisted game winner in the 71st minute. He dribbled the ball along the end line, got through two defenders and from the middle of the box, scoring his fourth goal of the season. It was also the 14th of his career.

Binghamton played a man down for the final 15 minutes but was able to finish off the match.

"I am very happy for the guys," head coach Tommy Moon said. "It was a tremendous effort today to get the result. We were very resilient and it was fantastic for our team to get a goal back after (UMass Lowell) tied it. Will Mahoney, Saar Almoznino and Khayr Ogunsanya all showed excellent leadership on defense today."

Binghamton held a 14-8 advantage in total shots and a 6-3 margin in shots on goal.

The Bearcats host UMBC next Saturday at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
