Volleyball falls to Colgate in four sets

Bearcats are defeated in final non-conference match of regular season

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton volleyball team (11-9, 2-4 America East) tried to rally from a 2-0 deficit, but ultimately fell in four sets to Colgate (10-11, 4-7 Patriot) Wednesday at Cotterell Court. The Raiders won the non-conference match 25-8, 25-17, 21-25 and 25-19.

Magi Milicevic had 13 kills for the Bearcats, while Regan Kadel added 26 assists. On defense, Eve Roman also put up 11 digs, and Sydney Geselbracht posted five blocks.

The first set got off to a tough start for the Bearcats, who fell behind 8-1 before calling a timeout. Colgate ultimately controlled the opening frame, going wire-to-wire to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Raiders carried their momentum into the second set, scoring eight of the first 10 points. Binghamton got within four points at 9-5, before Colgate took a 15-6 advantage into the media timeout. Returning from the break, Binghamton scored the next four points to cut the deficit to 15-10. However, the Bearcats would not get any closer, as the Raiders pulled away to ultimately take the second set.

Binghamton kept the third set close, as the Bearcats looked to avoid a sweep. Eventually, Colgate went up 17-10 in the frame. The Bearcats got within five points at 20-15, before scoring nine points to have set point on their doorstep at 24-20. During that run, Geselbracht recorded all five of her blocks. Ultimately, Milicevic recorded the final kill to put Binghamton on the board, as the Bearcats trailed in the match 2-1.

Trying to complete a reverse sweep, Binghamton tied Colgate early in the fourth set at 3-3. The Bearcats would then trail the Raiders 8-7, before Colgate scored five consecutive points to stretch its lead out to 13-7. Binghamton got within five points on a couple of occasions, before Colgate secured the match by taking the fourth set.

Binghamton has four matches against America East Conference opponents remaining this season. First, the Bearcats face Bryant at 1 p.m., Sunday in Smithfield, R.I.
