VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Vermont (16-10, 8-3 America East) closed the game with a 15-5 run to push past Binghamton men's basketball (5-21, 1-10 AE) 73-65 Thursday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
The Bearcats shot above 50 percent for most of the second half and led 60-58 with 6:49 remaining.
But the Catamounts used a 12-2 run in a 5:28 span to seize the game and season sweep of the Bearcats, who lost by one in Burlington six weeks ago. In that final stretch, Binghamton hit just 2-of-10 and turned the ball over six times, spoiling a chance at an upset win. The game was played to within eight points either way for 40 minutes.
"That stretch of time when we turned the ball over, which led to easy baskets ... those costly turnovers allowed them to separate and we couldn't recover," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "We were able to guard the 3-point line (UVM was 3-for-20) ... but we had some unforced errors in terms of shot selection down the stretch."
Graduate guard
Jackson Benigni led four in double figures with 15 points on 5-of-6 accuracy from 3-point range. He hit three of those shots in the first half, when the Bearcats kept in touch, only down 35-32 at intermission.
Junior point guard
Jeremiah Quigley added to his conference-leading assists mark with seven tallies and 14 points. He is just 14 assists away from setting the school single-season record. Junior forwards
Bryson Wilson and
Zyier Beverly added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Binghamton will host UAlbany at 4 p.m. Saturday.
