Softball Drops Pair of Game at Auburn War Eagle Classic

Bearcats defeated 11-5 by Illinois, 9-3 by Bradley

AUBURN, Ala. – Binghamton (1-6) lost a pair of games on the opening day of the Auburn War Eagle Softball Classic on Friday at Jane B. Moore Field. The Bearcats fell to Illinois (1-5) 11-5 in their first game before losing 9-3 to Bradley (4-2).

Redshirt junior second baseman Akira Kopec hit a team-best .750 (3-for-4) during the day while sophomore shortstop Emilia Podeszwa was 2-for-4 (.500) with a home run. The Bearcats also got a home run and two RBI from both junior outfielder Maddy Dodig (who was 2-for-5, .400) and junior catcher Elisa Allen (2-for-6, .333).

It was fielding, however, that was the biggest factor of the losses for the Bearcats. Of the 20 runs Binghamton allowed, only eight of them were earned.

The Bearcats were down 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning against the Illini when Podeszwa belted her solo home run. Illinois got a run back in the top of the next inning but the Bearcats pulled to within 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Allen doubled in a run and scored one batter later on a two-run homer by Dodig.

Illinois then blew the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to go up 10-4. The Bearcats made three errors during that frame.

Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey singled home Kopec in the bottom of the fifth inning but the Bearcats were held scoreless over the final two innings. Illinois, meanwhile, tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.

Christina Crawford won her first decision of the season while senior Brianna Roberts fell to 1-2. Roberts' career strikeout total, however, increased to 394. She remains in fourth place all-time in program history. In third place, with 398 strikeouts, is Michelle Weeks (2001-04).

Against Bradley, the Bearcats were cruising through four innings with a 1-0 lead. The only run of the game up until that point was an RBI double by Kopec in the bottom of the third inning.

The Braves, however, reeled off four runs in both the top of the fifth and sixth innings. Binghamton made three errors alone in the top of the fifth inning.

Allen led off the bottom of the sixth inning with her first home run of the season. It marked her 31st career home run, which moves her into sole possession of fifth place all time. She had been tied with Lisa Cadogan, who homered 30 times from 2013-16.

The Bearcats' final home run of the day was a solo shot by sophomore pinch hitter Madi Ringus in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Abby Rusher evened her record at 2-2 while junior pitcher Delaney Glover dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Freshman designated player Lauren Payne finished the day 2-for-5 (.400) with a double. Carey, meanwhile, hit safely in each game and finished 2-for-7.

Binghamton continues play at the Auburn War Eagle Classic on Saturday with games against Campbell (3 p.m.) and the host Tigers.
